UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF
PALMERSTON NORTH RESOLUTION. NEW PLYMOUTH’S ATTITUDE. Palmerston North, June 1. When the New Plymouth message regarding unemployment was referred to the Mayor of Palmerston North, Mr. A. E. Mansford, he said that he could not make a statement until he had received official' information. He did not know why the matter had been reopened, and until he had been acquainted with the reason he could not make any comment. Mr. Mansford communicated with the town clerk at New Plymouth. Mr. Mansford pointed out that the city council had actually increased its general rate. This had been offset by a reduction in the special rate for interest and sinking fund, and had been brought about as a result of the Government’s interest reduction legislation. The restoration of the 5 per cent, salary reduction had a limited application and would absorb only £3OO. Mr. Mansford gave an emphatic denial sto any suggestion that the council had been interested in or a party to the recent demonstrations in the city, as a resolution had been passed by the council disassociating itself from such action.
