ANOTHER WIN TO MOTUROA

HILL-GARDNER SCORING MACHINE.

PIRATES WEAK IN FORWARD LINE.

The feature of the match at Fitzroy was not that Moturoa won, but that the Pirates kept to four to nil the score of a team that had previously beaten them by 10 to nil. Of Moturoa’s strength in practically all departments there could be no doubt, but if Pirates had a HillGardner scoring machine in the front line the club would be a formidable proposition in attack as well as defence. Though Moturoa had the best of the first half, a rearrangement of the Pirates, team, McKay being brought up to centre, made the remainder of the game by no means one-sided. Backed by a strong defence, Pirates often swept up the field, only to discover the futility of attack against Crawford, Johns, Thomson and Co. without the definite scoring force of reliable shooters. Allsop was good, but he wanted a man with whom to combine. The teams were:—

Moturoa: Kenny; Crawford, Johns; W. Thomson, J. Thomson, F. Roper; Smith, Anderson, Gardner, R. Roper, Hill. Pirates: Atkinson; Anderson, McKay; H. Parrish, R. Parrish, Hall; Dean, Gillies, Milne, Cumming, -Allsop. Pirates kicked off, but Moturoa got through, R. Roper kicking behind instead of centring. Further pressure was relieved when H. Parrish sent to Gillies, to Milne, whose shot was cleared by Johns. Play was quicklA transferred for Smith to shoot behind. Atkinson punched out from R. Roper to concede a comer, and shortly afterwards J. Thomson shot, the first goal from well out. A fine piece of play followed immediately, J. Thomson passing to Hill, who ran up and centred to Gardner, whose shot found its mark. Within a minute Gardner dribbled up to shoot the third. Further play ranged along the other side, with Smith and Anderson attacking. They were baulked by McKay, but W. Thomson came up to send a long shot to Atkinson’s feet. Hall placed his side on the attack again and Allsop carried on to fail with a shot. The defence was tested and Dean tried unsuccessfully to penetrate. Play returned to the other end, where Hill staged a manoeuvre on his own. Atkinson saved a hard shot from Hill,’ who again connected and shot hard, McKay making a splendid save with his head. Cumming intercepted when F. Roper was sending to Hill, but Hill got possession and, beating H. Parrish, sent a hard shot ■at the goal, McKay heading out to concede a corner. Pirates broke through, Cumming passing to Dean, whose shot was fielded by Crawford. Passing to the other side the ball was returned by Allsop, whose long shot was pushed out by Kenny. At the other end F. Roper sent to Hill, whose shot just missed.

In an endeavour to hold Moturoa Pirates changed round in the second spell. Allsop went to centre, Hall to inside right, McKay to centre-half and H. Parrish to full-back. Nevertheless Moturoa pressed for some minutes until McKay dribbled through, beating several opponents, and passed on. A good shot was well headed away by Crawford. Pressure by Moturoa was repelled and then Hall started his side on the attack, the ball passing to Dean, Milne, Allsop and the Parrishes in an effort to get through. Crawford headed a good clearance and away went Moturoa; Hill shot from the side and Alderson in attempting to save took the ball on his leg, accidentally deflecting it into the net for the fourth. Again Pirates went to the attack, Dean putting in a long one, just outside the posts. Play moved from one end to the other. The Pirates were not to be despised and several times had Moturoa on the defence; had the team had more science in the forwards it must have scored. Moturoa had a lucky escape when, attacking in fan-like formation, Pirates gave to Allsop, and Kenny was hard put to it to throw out; F. Roper rushed across and assisted Crawford to clear. Pirates were playing much more on the attack, Moturoa being kept in its own territory for some time. Allsop strengthened the forwards, but the defence could not be pierced, often because of the lack of reliable shooting men. Moturoa got free and Hill dribbled in from the side to send a hot shot, Atkinson coming out to save. Before Pirates could clear shots were cleared from Hill, Gardner and Smith. Once more to the attack, Moturoa invaded scoring territory. Gillies tried to clear, but Gardner secured and tested Atkinson. At the other end Allsop had another shot, but the defence held.
