ELTHAM GOLF TOURNEY

80 PLAYERS TAKING PART COURSE DRYING AFTER RAIN. SENIOR FINAL STAGES REACHED. J. STEWART’S EXCELLENT PLAY. Over eighty players, including many low handicap men from the New Ply* mouth, Waitara, Stratford, Hawera, Mangamingi, Te Ngutu and Manaia clubs, as well as over 30 Eltham members, took part in the opening stages of the Eltham Golf Club’s third annual tournament at the Highlands links on Saturday and yesterday. Unsettled weather was in evidence on Saturday, but the course was in good condition and for match play yesterday was the best it has been in any tournament, the greens particularly being even and neither too fast nor too slow. The best golf of the tournament so "far was played by J. Stewart, a young Eltham. player. With a 76 in the qualifying round, he scored a 73 in the first round of championship match play, one over the scratch score. In the second round he did better -still, being one under scratch after 12 holes, and three under scratch with three holes to go. At this stage A. J. Shaw’s course record of 69 was in jeopardy, Stewart beginning the 17th requiring two bgeys to equal the record. A five at the Woolshed made the task hard. Stewart placed his third nine feet from the pin and the putt balanced on the edge. His 71 was one under the scratch score, giving him a nett 66. Stewart’s card was: 343454454— 36; 344352455—35; total, 71. Stewart and H. P. Dale will meet this morning in one semi-final and H. P. Wills and T. A. Thomson will contest the other. , .... The first 16 in Saturdays qualifying round went into the Central Taranaki championship, the next 32 in order of gross scores went into the Highlands and Eltham handicaps and the best 16 net scores of the rest were drawn in the Nimrod handicap. A teams match and a medal handicap were also played, the Eltham No. 1 team being successful. Match play yesterday in the morning and afternoon took the events to the end of the second round and to-day the semi-finals and finals will be decided. ELTHAM MEN PROMINENT. The qualifying round found six Eltham players in the first seven, Abbott and L. Gibson leading with 73’s. T. A. Thomson (New Plymouth) with 77 was the leading visitor. When the round was complete the championship 16 did not include L. T. Quin (83), R. B. Anderson (83) and J. J. Pease (86), who had to give pride of place to lesser lights in the persons of M. E. Meuli (Te Ngutu), C. Roberts (Eltham) and G. W. Haughton (New Plymouth). Dale was sixth on the list. The first round saw the elimination of Gibson by H. R. Casey and of Abbott by R. C. Wills, Dale having an easy win over A. J; Quin, and J. Stewart having a margin of 6 and 5 against R. Boon with a round of 73. The afternoon matches found Dale through to the semi-final fairly easily against R. Wills, and H. P. Wills had to difficulty with O’Callaghan. Stewart beat F. Quin at the 14th hole and T. A. Thomson beat H. R. Casey 3 up and 2. The semi-finals' of the Highlands handicap find S. McKay ranged against S. G. Cooper, and L. Quin meeting A. C. Wills. T. Gibson beat his father, H. B.
