PARK CROQUET CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING AT HAWERA. The annual meeting of the Park Croquet Club was held at Hawera on Friday. Officers elected were: President, Mrs. A. D. Murdoch; vice-presidents, Mrs. J. Hey and Mrs. J. W. Harding; secretary, Mrs. J. Exley; treasurer, Mrs. F. Chadwick; executive committee, Mrs. S. Barrow, Mrs. W. Shaw, Mrs. Jackson and Miss Tait. The annual report stated that the recent season had been successful. Four new members had joined during the year and Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Webber had been farewelled. Thanks were due to the fiorough Council for enlarging the lawns. During the winter months of last year the club held flag 500 socials fortnightly for the purpose of securing funds for the two new shelters, which made an appreciated improvement. Cordial appreciation was expressed at the gift of a champion shield by Mrs. W. A. Spragg, Miss Allenby for her gift of four winning pegs, all those who gave trophies for competitions on opening and closing day and Mr. G. Grindrod for a mallet. A number of inter-club matches were played during the year. Appreciation of the help of the Borough Council and the services of the caretaker, Mr. Ross, in his attention to the lawns during the year was expressed. The club also placed on record its thanks and appreciation to Mr. Collier for auditing the club’s boks. A vote of thanks to Mrs. Murdoch and the Borough Council for the use of the room was carried by acclamation. SCHOOL FOOTBALL AT MANAIA. RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED. Record entries have been received for the school football and basketball tour- : nament to be held at Manaia to-day. This is the seventh year of the competitions and on each occasion there has been a growing interest. To-day 25 teams will take the field in the primary schools, seven-a-side Rugby and 11 teams will compete in the secondary contest. In basketball 23 teams are entered in the primary division and three in the secondary. The trophies are the Yarrow Cups in the primary games and the Bennett and Sutton and Herbert Smith Cups in the secondary. Altogether over 500 children will be seen in the games. The entries are:— Primary schools football: Kaponga, Kapuni, Pungarehu (2), Stratford, Tikorangi, Manaia (3), Tawhiti, Kaponga Convent, Opunake, Oaonui, Otakeho, Okaiawa, Pihama, Hawera Convent, Manaia Convent, Auroa, Rahotu, Hawera (2), Toko, Matapu, Turuturu. Secondary schools: Opunake, Manaia Convent Old Boys, Hawera High (5), Tawhiti, Old Boys, Manaia (3). Primary basketball: Otakeho, Okaiawa, Pihama, Tokaora, Hawera Convent, Riverlea, Auroa, Hawera, Kaponga, Pukengahu, Opunake Convent, Pungarehu, Stratford, Tawhiti, Opunake, Oaonui, Matapu, Toko, Manaia (2), Manaia Convent, Rahotu, Turuturu. Secondary: Opunake, Hawera Convent, Manaia. TOKAORA DISTRICT NEWS. SUCCESSFUL FLAG 500 . AND DANCE. The most successful flag 500 and dance held in Tokaora this season took place on Tuesday night. The hall was crowded. Hooker’s Orchestra provided the music for the dancing, while extras were played by Mr. O. McDonald. During the evening Mr. Stewart entertained with songs and musical items. Johnson, the well-known ■ Freisian breeder, has gone to Hamilton ' to attend the annual meeting of the ' New Zealand Freisian Breeders’ Association, of which he is vice-president. Miss Alma Barr. Scott Road, is spending a holiday in the Woodville and Wellington districts. Miss M. Bolland is visiting relatives in Hamilton. Miss Joyce Moffitt, Puniho is the guest of Miss Susie Johnson. Mrs. H. J. Finlay has returned home from Wanganui. PERSONAL ITEMS. . 1 Miss M. Shipton was farewelled by the Hawera staff of Messrs. George and Doughty, Ltd., on Friday night and a presentation was made to her. Mr. G. A. Duncan has returned to Hawera from Wellington, where the Dairy Commission, of which he is a member, has been in session. Mr.. E. R. S. Dale, who has been transferred from the Commercial Bank,' Hawera, was farewelled by members of the Savage Club on Friday night. Mr. E. R. S. Dale, who leaves Hawera ■ to-day to take up his new position at Napier, was farewelled by various bodies at the week-end. On Friday night there was a representative gathering of the Savage Club, of which Mr. Dale has been treasurer for some years. Last night he was farewelled by the congregation of St. Mary’s Church, in which he has held all the principal offices. OPERA HOUSE TALKIES. “ROMAN SCANDALS” TO-NIGHT. Eddie Cantor, comedian, has new complications to maker’his banjo-eyes pop in “Roman Scandals,” his fourth annual screen musical comedy for Samuel Goldwyn. With Ruth Etting, Gloria Stuart, David Manners and this year collection of Goldwyn beauties, the picture comes to the Hawera Opera House to-night for a season of three nights with matinees daily. The season’s fastest and merriest tunes are promised in a yarn of adventure among the beautiful slave girls of ancient Rome, the Caesars and their ferocious lions, which winds up in a chariot race as breath-takingly funny as the bull-fight in “The Kid from Spain.”
