SILVER BILL PASSES HOUSE
BACKING OF AMERICAN CURRENCY SENATE ACCEPTANCE EXPECTED. By Telegraph—Press Assn—Copyright. Washington, May 31. The House of Representatives to-day passed and sent to the Senate the Administration’s Silver Bill, the main objectives of which are to use silver as the .backing for a quarter of the United States’ currency compared with threequarters backed by gold. Early favourable Senate action is expected, although members of the Democratic silver bloc, who wanted even broader legislation, contended that the measure was just “a silver brick” and would result in prolonging the depression for ten years. Republicans attacked the proposal, as involving unsound monetary principle.
