KAWAROA PADDLING POOL

IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE. MEETING ACCEPTS TENDER. For the improvement to the paddling pool originally bequeathed by Mrs. Alice Honeyfield, the Kawaroa Park Foreshore Beautifying Society at its annual meeting last night decided to accept the tender of £B7 submitted by Messrs. Jones and Sandford. The improvement will consist in concreting the pool and making it safer for children, the depths ranging from nine inches at one end to 15 inches at the seaward end. The Borough Council had forwarded plans for improvements to the paddling pool, said the chairman, Mr. V. H. Beal. Quotes had been obtained. The proposal was to concrete the pool on three sides and to put in a gateway for cleaning-out purposes. Mr. Petty, in moving that the tender be accepted, said that the pool would be a great asset to the society. He witnessed the popularity of similar pools on the Marine Parade at Napier. Suggestions that the society should entertain ideas of having the pool above the lev.el of the sea were made by Mr. R. Lang. At Napier the water was pumped into the pools, and they were not exposed to the sea as at New Plymouth. The society had not thought of the matter, said Mr. Beal. The committee felt that to honour Mrs. Honeyfield’s original gift improvements should be made to the present pool. The president said the present pool did not hold much water and was very uneven. It was intended to improve the floor, making the pool perfectly safe. The secretary, Mr. R. G. Howell, said that in the Borough Council plan the depths would be nine inches on the shore end and 15 inches at the deep end in normal conditions. He supported the improvements to the present pool in preference to the building of a pool on the land. So many people sat on the beach to escape the breezes that even if half a dozen pools were built up top there would probably be two children in the pool on top and 22 in that below. Children had a natural love of playing on a reef. The tender was accepted.
