DESERVING CAUSES.

To-day the public of New Plymouth will be asked to support financially three institutions which perform invaluable service to public welfare. St. John Ambulance Brigade, The Taranaki Life-Saving Society, and the Young Men’s and Young Women’s Christian Associations are bodies which are limited in the scope of their work only by the interest and support given them by the community. They appeal for funds, not merely to carry on but to permit them to extend the scope of their activities into new spheres of essential service. The value of the ambulance js recognised so universally that there is no need to give it further emphasis. The Life Saving Society provides safeguard for thousands of men, women and children who seek recreation on Taranaki beaches during summer. The Y.M.C.A and Y.W.C.A. do social service of a more subtle but none the less vital nature. They provide moral and physical training for the youth of all classes, and encourage in the wisest and most practical way the development of good citizens. All these are services which require finance to permit, them to be carried on. All use equipment that wears out and must be replaced, and incur administrative expenses. A moment of quiet thought on the part of every citizen of New Plymouth who is approached for fund contributions to-day—an endeavour to determine just what sacrifice these institutions are justly entitled to demand from the individual—will ensure the complete success of the appeal.
