NORMANBY CHURCH WORK

MEETING OF PARISHIONERS. The parishioners of St. Paul’s Anglican Church met in the church hall on Wednesday night, the vicar, Rev. H. Whitby James, presiding over a good attendance. Officers were elected for the ensuing yea?. The vicar briefly outlined the work of the past year and suggested a scheme of progress for the future. The question of erecting a suitable memorial to the memory of the late Mr. S. Anstis, who was for over 20 years people’s warden, was discussed and it was decided to obtain particulars for the erection of a reading desk. Arrangements were made to hold a social evening and card party to raise funds, and also to promote the social life of the church. The suggested formation of a choir was also favourably considered. Mr. C. Cleaver was appointed vicars warden and the following vestry members were elected: Mesdames F. Pidgeon and T. Evans, Miss Gibson, Messrs. T. Evans and Davey 'people’s warden). After the meeting a social hour was spent. PERSONAL ITEMS. Messrs. A. K. North and P. 6. .Veale left Hawera yesterday to attend sittings of the Dairy Commission. Mr. North has been briefed to represent several companies and Mr. Veale will give expert evidence. Miss N. B. Lewis was farewelled at the Tawhiti school yesterday afternoon and a presentation was . lade by the children and members of the school committee. She has been teacher of standards 111. and IV. during the past six years and has accepted an appointment in sole charge of Ruru school, in the Canterbury Education Board district. Several items of vocal and instrumental music were contributed by the children and on behalf of the school Master W. Duncan presented' Miss Lewis with a handbag. Miss Lewis has taken great interest in teaching the children physical drill and swimming and in cultivating in them an appreciation of music. Mr. H. Thrush, chairman of . the school committee, spoke in appreciation of Miss Lewis’ qualities, and presented her with a toilet set. GENERAL ITEMS. St. John’s Institute, Hawera. About 50 members and friends of St. John’s Young People’s Institute met at Hawera on Monday night. Mr. E. C. Glen presided. Mr. Glen gave a pianoforte item which was followed by a, vocal solo from Miss Mary Smith. The programme for the evening took the form of two lectures, the first given by Mr. M. R. Jones on “The Treaty of Waitangi and the second by Mr. L. A. Taylor on The Covenanters of Scotland.” Both were interesting and instructive. Meremere Flag Five Hundred. The flag five hundred and dance evening in aid of the Meremere Cricket Club and school was well attended. Tables occupied by Misses G. Murray and C. Webb, Messrs. A. Williams and J. Blackler and Mrs. J. Davison, Messrs. S. Geary, B Murphy and M. Murray, tied for the first prize, the latter winning in the play-off. Music for dancing was supplied by Messrs. M. Murray, J. Bloor and S. Geary. Mr. M. Reeves was master of ceremonies. ADVERTISERS* ANNOUNCEMENTS. A boys and girls’ agricultural. social and dance will be held in the Okaiawa town hall on Tuesday.
