BIG BEN’S OVERHAUL

DELICACY OF THE TASK. London. May 8. The clock tower in the Houses of Parliament has been turned into an engingineering shop. The task of taking Big Ben to pieces for an overhaul will occupy a month, for its moving parts weigh five tons. The most delicate work will be the rehanging, as Big Ben now is suspended by bolts which have been in use for 75 years. The new bolts must be precisely similar, otherwise the tone of the bell, by which millions of people all over the British Isles set their watches every day, will be altered.
