Miss Margaret Balharry returned on Monday to Havelock North after spending the holidays at New Plymouth. Miss N. Mackay, Mataura, who has been the guest of Mrs. M. Campbell, left yesterday on her return. Mrs. A. M. Mac Diarmid returned to Manaia on Tuesday after being the guest of her mother, Mrs. C. S. Curtis. Mrs. E. Moir, Devonport, Auckland; and Mrs. F. Morton, Remuera, are the guests of the latter’s brother, Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour, for the Central school jubilee. Miss Eileen Campbell has returned to Rotorua and Miss Kathleen Campbell to Auckland after having spent the school vacation at New Plymouth. Mrs. A. Evers-Swindell entertained at afternoon tea on Monday in honour of Mrs. C. H. Waterston, who ip the guest of Mrs. E. Griffiths.

Members of the Patea Plunket Society bade farewell to Mrs. F. C. Jenkins on Friday before her departure for Auckland, where she will reside. Mrs. Jenkins, who has been an ardent worker in the society’s interests at Patea, was presented with a pair of crystal candlesticks by the president, Mrs. R. W. Haddow, on behalf of the committee. Mr. and Mrs. I. Jones entertained a number of young folk on Saturday night in honour of Miss Joan Spurdie’s birthday. Red carnations and autumn leaves formed the decorations in the drawing room, where four bridge tables were arranged. The dining room was also decorated with red carnations and redtinted leaves and a birthday cake was in the shape of an old-fashioned basket of flowers. Mrs. Jones presented Miss Phyllis Simmons and Mr. R. Adams with the prizes for bridge and dancing followed. Mrs. Jones wore a frock of new navy figured crepe with coatee, while Miss Spurdie wore a floral georgette in leaf green. Among those present were Mrs. Haddow, Misses R. Honeyfield, P. and H. Y.W.-Y.M.C.A., NEW PLYMOUTH. MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. The monthly board meeting of the Y.W.C.A. for May was held at New Plymouth, those present including . Mesdames A. Alexander (in the chair), O. Blundell, A. S. Clark, P. C. Davie, L. A. Brown, C. Botterill, A. G. Johnson, F. Therkleson, Misses Townsend and M. Greenwell. The resignation of Mrs. D. Menzies was received. Mrs. Alexander welcomed Miss Townsend, treasurer. Interesting correspondence from the world’s president, Miss van Asch van Wyck, spoke of the present serious position in the German Y.W.C.A. which, although the largest in the world, was struggling for existence. The matter was causing grave concern among the members of the world’s executive committee. Miss van Wyck is attending the convention of the American Y.W.C.A., Philadelphia. The main business considered by the meeting was the building fund, the position of the present contract having been considerably eased by a gift of a further £lOO from Dr. G. Home and the forthcoming street appeal. Plans were going forward in conjunction with the St. John Ambulance Society and the Royal Life Saving Society, it was reported. The report of the general secretary for the month revealed a comprehensive programme. In reporting on the work for girls under 18 it was stated that the Girl Citizens numbered 40 and that there was an excellent attendance at the quarterly community gathering.. Many of the mothers attended the meeting and plans were discussed with them. Mrs. P. C. Davie, vice-president, gave an address. The junior girls who met on Saturday mornings had largely centred their attention on “tramping” and the acting of nursery rhymes. . The senior girls’ clubs had dur mg April planned new programmes, and these were being carried out. Papers had been taken on the system of provincial government and on the Douglas credit system, while play-reading and handcrafts also formed part of the programmes. The report on rural work showed that the branch of the. Y.W.-Y.M.C.A. at Oakura was beginning to stabilise, the educational and religious side of the girls’ programme showing signs of definite form.

Goble, Croydon Road, to celebrate the coming-of-age of their daughter Mavis, over 70 guests being present. The rooms and supper tables were decorated in blue and gold, the work of Mr. H. Parsons, Carterton. The guests were entertained with games, competitions and dancing, the wim.ers being Mrs. E. A. Adlam, Mr. C. Fowler and Miss D. Goble. Dance music was supplied by Mr. Crosby. Mr. J. Bannin, Wellington, contributed several .guitar and cornet solos. A birthday cake was cut by the guest of honour, who was attired in a blue floral slipper length frock of silk georgette. Mr. E. A. Adlam proposed the toast of Miss Goble and Mr. W. Townend replied on her behalf. Among the gifts was one presented by the Midhirst Basketball Club, of which Miss Goble is a member. A Highland dance by Miss Lorna Goble, Cardiff, brought the evening to a close.

Tangarakau Hockey Dance. The Hinemoa Hockey Club held a successful euchre party and dance on Tuesday night. The club was unfortunate in that the weather was very rough, but there was a fairly large attendance. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mr. P. Rosewame and'Miss Joyce Kerr. The euchre prizes were won by Mrs. J. Betts and Mr. D. Betts. Those present included Mesdames J. Betts, H.
