MANAIA SWISS DANCE

500 PRESENT IN TOWN HALL. WINNERS OF * THE COMPETITIONS. The annual Swiss dance at Manaia was held on Monday, when over 500 people gathered in the town hall to spend a happy evening. The proceeds were over £9O, which is a striking tribute to the good work of the organisers. Father Butler welcomed the visitors, who came from many parts of Taranaki, and on behalf of the Swiss people thanked the organisers, Mrs. Engelberger and Miss Bernold, for their successful work, also the judges of the competitions and the donors of the prizes (business people of Hawera, Okaiawa and Manaia). He also thanked the musicians—the Swiss orchestra and Guy’s orchestra. The former was as good as any to be found in Switzerland, he said, and one of the players was a champion in his native country. The hall was effectively decorated with greenery and fems and the stage particularly was very attractive. The supper room also was brightened by decorations. Several dancing competitions were held and attracted much interest and keen competition. The Swiss waltzing was judged by Mr. Leuthard, Stratford, who gave the award to Mr. Butler and Mrs. Zimmerman among six couples. Mr. J. Kaiser and Miss Bernold were runners-up. A waltzing competition judged by Mr. J. Cosgrove and Mrs. E. C. Evans was entered by nine couples, the standard of dancing being very high and even. Five couples were recalled for a semi-final and three were asked to take the floor in the final, which was won by Mr. L. Whalen and Mrs. A. J. Hughes. A foxtrot competition was won by Mr. Hamsley and Miss N. Gopperth, five couples competing, and a Swiss schottische competition was won by Mr. J. Kaiser and Miss I. Bernold, four couples competing. Sympathy with the relatives, of the late Mr. McCallum, an old and useful member of the Farmers’ Union in the Okaiawa district, was expressed at the South Taranaki conference of the union yesterday. Mr. H. Hodge, Alton, was elected a life member of the Farmers’ Union by the South Taranaki conference yesterday. Tributes were paid to the excellent work he had done for the union, of which he was a foundation member. Mr. A. B. Muggeridge said it was Mr. Hodge who had kept the Alton branch alive. Mr. Roy Tait has been discharged from the Wellington hospital, where he has been a patient for the past six months, undergoing treatment for eye trouble. GENERAL ITEMS. Commercial Hotel Renovations. The complete renovation internally and externally of the Commercial Hotel, Hawera, is contemplated by the Hawera Borough Council. Architects are to be asked to submit plans for the work, the cost not to exceed £l5OO. Reporting on the hotel to the council the Mayor, Mr. J. E. Campbell, said that in the property the borough had an asset which must be preserved and one which had yielded thousands of pounds revenue to the general account. Although the present building was about 39 years old (it having replaced the original building destroyed in the file of August, 1895), a recent inspection disclosed that given immediate attention, the structure would still give many years of service. Spread of Rabbits. A remit from Okaiawa urging that owing to the spread, of rabbits the Minister of Agriculture be requested to instruct his officers to watch the position carefully in each district was carried by the South Taranaki Farmers’ Union meeting at Hawera yesterday.
