CANADA’S MARKETING BOARD

REGULATION OF PRODUCTS. Ottawa, Canada. A Government bill now before Parliament, and almost certain of passing without substantial amendment at the present session, provides for the establishment of a Marketing Board with drastic powers to regulate the production and sale of natural products of Canada. The scope of the measure is broad, «nd its consequences of a far-reaching character. It covers all natural products —of agriculture, of the seas and rivers and lakes and the forest—but not minerals. Not only are products in their natural form subject to regulation, but also those which are processed in whole or in part. Briefly the Natural Products Marketing Act contains the following provisions: . . For the creation of a Dominion Marketing Board, with power to form local boards and to co-operate with provincial agencies: Authority to provide by order-m--council for the regulated marketing of any natural product; Control by license of the export of any regulated product; Control of the inter-provincial marketing of any regulated product; Regulation of the importation of any commodity likely to compete with a regulated product in Canada; Powers to enable organized producers to control the marketing of their products; , , , , Control of the grades of regulated products which are exported; Wide powers in investigating price spreads, in the handling of regulated goods, with authority to fix fair spreads. Severe penalties for any infringements of the law. The purpose of the law is to secure to the producer a fairer proportion of the price paid by the consumer. It bears many points of resemblance to the British Marketing Act
