ATTEMPT TO BLOW UP SAFE.

BURGLAR DISTURBED AT ROTORUA FAILURE OF GELIGNITE CHARGE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Rotorua, Last N’ght. An unsuccessful attempt was made in the early hours of Monday morning to burgle a safe in the premises of the Rotorua Bus Company in Fenton Street At 1.30 am. the attention of the nightwatchman was attracted by a dull “boom,” and on proceeding to open the office doors he was just in time to see a man making his escape through a garage which adjoins the office. The intruder rushed through the garage, breaking a window at the rear, and escaped over the fences of adjoining houses. The nightwatchman gave the alarm but the intruder had too long a start and made good his escape. Access to the premises had been obtained by forcing the main garage doors and breaking the window of the office. A charge of gelignite was rammed into the keyhole of the safe and muffled with a number of old coats, but the first shot was unsuccessful in breaking the lock and the burglar was in the act of laying a second charge when he was interrupted. The only money in the safe was a sum of approximately £5.
