UNEMPLOYMENT CREATION

STRATFORD COUNCILLOR’S VIEW. In protesting against the policy of discharging men when the council had the money to retain them, Cr. W. P. P« Gordon moved at the meeting of the Stratford Borough Council last night that two men be added to the permanent staff He contended that though five men were discharged last year the council -had since spent on casual labour a sum that would have paid two permanent men. His motion lapsed for want of a seconder. ) Cr. Gordon said there had been a song about unemployment, but the council had created unemployment by its action last year in discharging five men from the outside staff. The council spent money during the past year on casual labour equal to the wages of two men, and he maintained there was no sense in paying casual labour when two permanent men could be employed for the amount allowed in the estimates for casual labour. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. McMillan): And if you employ the two permanent men the others who receive something from the amount paid to casual labour will go without.
