ADVENTURES OF THE CHUMS

Ted and-Gwen were pjaying a game.that was not very much to Richard’s liking. They were trying to discover who could skip for the longer time. Richard had left them in disgust, but he soon returned, shouting to attract their attention. “Hi ! Hi !” he cried. ■’ The call so distracted Gwen that she missed her step. She was annoyed.

• The reason, why Richard burst so abruptly into Gwen’s game was that he had found a job more to his taste. He had persuaded Mrs. Cook to allow him to beat a large carpet. Of course, Ted and Gwen had to be brought to assist. Here you see them, superintended by Polly, carting the carpet to the lawn, where Richard proposed to bang the dust out of it with a stick. Richard was rather in a hurry.

Richard’s haste was bound to cause some calamity. Gwen found that the carpet impeded her view, and so had to stumble along as best she could. With Richard in .'such a hurry to get on With the job, the inevitable happened. Poor Gwen slipped and down went the carpet, knocking all the breath out of her. “My!”. cried Polly, “what’s Gwen up to ?”

Here is a picture of the carpet-beating in full swing. Richard thoroughly enjoyed himself, but the same cannot be said of Gwen. Unfortunately for her she took a position on the other side of the carpet, and, before she realised it, was so smothered in clouds of dust that she was forced to shut her eyes; Unfortunately, also, she backed into the carpet. .

When Gwen backed into the carpet because the dust distracted her, she was, of course, in a position to receive the full force of Richard’s next blow. If that blow knocked dust out of the carpet, it also knocked dust out of poor Gwen. At any rate, it made her jump to such an extent that she pulled the carpet down. 'To say the least, Richard was surprised, because naturally he could not knpw what was the matter.

Poor Gwen I By the time she had crawled from under the carpet which had. fallen on her she had'her full share of the dust. _ • The worst of it was Richard blamed her for the accident. She was so disgusted that she walked off, and went on with her skipping, much to Richard’s annoyance, because without her assistance he could not continue his carpetbeating. But you couldn’t blame Gwen, could you? , ,
