JUDGING OF VEGETABLES. AWARDS IN SOUTH TARANAKI. Preliminary judging of school plots in the South Taranaki Boys and Girls’ Club' vegetable competitions has been completed .by . the judges, Messrs.. R. Syme and G. Betts, but points have ’still to be awarded for produce from the plots exhibited at the winter show and for the record books. The points warded to date are:— Tawhiti.

SCHOOL ADMISSION AGE. RIVERLEA RESIDENTS’ MOTION. At the recent householders meeting at Riverlea a motion was carried unanimously that the meeting was of the opinion that the present school entrance age was not in the best interests of the children, and that the former fiveyear entrance age should be immediately reverted to. At a subsequent meeting of householders, Mr. C. Chapman was elected chairpjan and Mr. Voullaire secretary and treasurer. MR. SEMPLE’S BREEZY MANNER. BRIGHT SPOTS IN HAWERA TALK. Mr. R. Semple, MP., was in fine form for his speech at Hawera on Friday, and a serious discourse was enlivened by what the Americans are pleased to label with the colourful term of “wisecracks.’ All shades of political opinion thoroughly enjoyed them, and repeatedly there were gales of laughter, above _ which the speaker could not be heard. I’ve got no time for street comer waters or any other sort. He that does not work should not eat. It wouldnt do him any harm. HAWERA FOOTBALL GYMNASIUM. ANNUAL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The annual meeting of the Hawera football gymnasium committee was held on Friday night. Officers elected were: President, Mr. H. Clapham; treasurer, Mr. J. E. Campbell; secretary, Mr. R. J. O’Dea. The Empire Old Boys club was granted the use of the building on Thursday nights and the Hawera club on Tuesday nights. The president reported that the gymnasium was proving a valuable asset to the town. A great deal of money was recently spent on it and electric light was installed. Hot and cold showers were provided and the building had been reconditioned and painted. The lookout towers were straightened and made During the year successful negotiations with the boxing association were made, the association agreeing to pay £4 per tournament plus lighting. There was a credit balance of £l9 8s 4d after an expenditure of £24 Ils lid on the building. ;
