ENGLISH FOOTBALL FINAL
MANCHESTER CITY THE WINNER. CROWD CHEERS AUSTRALIANS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. London, April 28. Though this was the greatest day in English football the Australian cricketers were not forgotten at Wembley. A crowd of 93,000 rose and sang “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” followed by three cheers, when the song leader announced the presence of the cricketers. His Majesty also received an ovation when he shook hands with both teams of footballers before and after the match, the crowd meanwhile singing hymns and popular tunes. In the match itself, which was the cup final, Manchester City defeated Portsmouth by 2 to 1, though the winner was behind at half-time. All seats had long since been sold, those purchasing them establishing a “corner” and obtaining fantastic prices five and ten times the nominal value. Manchester scored the winning goal two minutes from time. Arsenal with 57 points retained the League championship. Huddersfield with 51 was second and Newcastle, and Sheffield United had 34 and 31 respectively are relegated to the second division.
