RATEPAYERS’ MEETING

MOTUEOA DISTRICT AFFAIRS. WORK ON NGAMOTU DOMAIN. The annual meeting of the Moturoa Association was held on Saturday night. Mr. L. Sutton presided. The balance-sheet, which showed a credit of Is lOd, was adopted subject to audit. The receipts totalled 17s, including 3s brought forward from last year. The expenditure was 15s 2d. There were 15 members of the association, said the secretary (Mr. H. Sanders). Mr. W. W. Thomson said he had promised to convene a meeting of the Combined Ratepayers’ Associatic towards the en.'. f May. He said an endeavour would be made to resuscitate + he organisation. It was for the association to say whether it considered it useful to carry on the combined association.

The chairman said good work had been done by the association, especially in the way of taking ratepayers to a loan poll. “It seems, however, that there is a deadly killing apathy about the affairs of the association,” said Mr. Sutton. He thought there was a great deal of work the association could do.

It was decided to elect delegates to the Combined Ratepayers’ Association. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. L. Sutton; vice-president, Mr. R. Millman; secretary, Mr. H. Sanders; delegates to the Combined Ratepayers’ Association, Messrs. Sutton and Thomson.

The chairman stressed the value of the association and said he would like to see more support given. The district was well lit and it obtained its share of the borough expenditure. He considered residents who had individual applications to make to the borough council would do well to make representations through the association and thus secure ics support. It was decided that the subscription should remain at Is, Mr. Thomson’s suggestion that each member should endeavour to enlist five others being endorsed.

A meeting of the Ngamotu Domain committee was presided over Ly Mr. R. Millman. The chairman acknowledged the splendid work of Mr. L. Sutton and the late Mr. Honeyfield. There could be no doubt, he said, that the good condition of the domain was due to their efforts and to the efforts cf the volunteers who had assisted them. An account of the work accomplished during the year stated 'That part of the domain had been fenced off and trees had been planted, principally pines, bluegums and wattles. The trees appeared to have rooted well in spite of the unfavourable season. Approximately 200 pines would be required to replace dead ones. Gorse had been grubbed in that part of the reserve and the inner part of the domain had been kept free from weeds. The pohutukawas required cutting back and thinning out. The tennis court had been resown and, grass having taken a good hold, the court should be in good order for next season. Substantial gates had been erected by Mr. Sutton at the entrance from Breakwater. Road and a path cut into the domain. Another tennis court was being excavated on the outer area, provision having been made to fence and grass it. The committee had been fortunate in having been granted relief labour, as all its rev-? enue had been spent on material, trees and seeds. The committee was indebted to Mr. Sutton for planning the layout and planting the trees, and for his general management of the domain. The part of the domain leased by Mr. Linn had been gorse-grubbed and the hedges had been trimmed.
