Accommodation for Racehorses. Accommodation for the large number of horses visiting Hawera for the steeplechase meeting has been found in the Egmont A. and P. Association’s loose boxes. This has necessitated the installation of a temporary lighting system. Working in the Snow. Despite the heavy fall of snow on Mt. Egmont, work has been continued on the hydro-electric installation at Dawson Falls. Water for Stock. There was no place for watering stock between Hawera and Tariki, reported the service officer to the monthly meeting of the South Taranaki Automobile Association. The meeting decided to refer the matter to the S.P.C.A. The officer also mentioned the delay occasioned to motorists by the presence on the road of large herds of stock controlled by only one man. Relief for Unemployed. Assistance was given to 39 Hawera district families by the weekly distribution of rations to registered unemployed on Saturday. Pensions for War Veterans. The case of returned soldiers who are not ligible for pensions because they can not prove that recent illnesses were the result of war service was briefly mentioned by Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., at the annual meeting of the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers’ Association on Friday. Mr. Dickie was assured of the support of the association in the drafting of amending legislation to meet such instances. Manaia Dental Clinic. Over 400 children received dental treatment at the Manaia dental clinic from Miss Kellow last year. Theft From Hotel Bedroom. A woman staying at the Royal Hotel, Hawera, missed a small sum of money from her room at the week-end. It is understood several similar thefts have occurred in Taranaki recently. Licensed Victuallers Trophy. A solid silver cup for golf donated by the White Horse Distilleries Ltd. .(London), and insured for £lOO, has been sent to Mr. J. N. Anderson, Hawera, by the North Island Licensed Victuallers’ Association for exhibition. It. will be competed for annually, the first, competition to occur at Napier in July next. Improvements to Racecourse. The Egmont Racing Club has made several improvements to the racecourse in preparation for the winter meeting. The brush in the hurdles has been renewed, a working bee having cut a quantity of manuka, scrub in the Tongahoe Valley. Four weighing-in stalls have been provided for the first four horses to obviate kicking.
