Increased returns in the collection of current rates and arrears, as compared with the position at March 31, 1933, were disclosed in a statement of the, figures as at the close of last month, presented at a meeting of the Waikato County Council this week. Current rates struck amounted to £34,205, and of this total £23,301 had been collected, the percentage being 70.2. A rebate of £304 was given. Last year the rates struck totalled £34,047, and at March 31, £23,118, or 68.3 per cent., had been collected. “Pillaging of stored cargo in the docks of London has been practically abolished,” declared Captain A. W. Pearse, who is at present visiting Dunedin in connection with the Port of London Authority. This practice was being conducted on an alarming scale, but the introduction of trained Alsatians and bulldogs, as assistants of a force of 700 police, had been responsible for a great change. It was the duty of the dogs to keep a watch on all stores, and on the discovery of a pillager or suspected burglar, to knock him down and bark for the police. The ravages of the pukeko on the eggs of game birds was discussed at the last meeting of the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. It was stated that instances had been proved of the birds eating all the eggs in the nests of game birds. The president, Mr. F. E. McKenzie, said that the ranger had actually seen a pukeko tear the head off a young duck. Unless something was done, the breeding swamps would contain nothing but pukeko in the future. It was decided to secure more definite proof of the bird’s depredations, if possible, by photographic records, and to take up the discussion next year.
