OPENING UP NEW COAL SEAM. Early in the week there was a fire on the mail lorry, but fortunately neither mail nor stores were damaged. ’ The work of taking huts from Tangarakau to the site of the new coal seam at Tatu has begun. Other huts, dismantled and loaded on to lorries, have been removed from Heao and passed through Tatu during the week. With a fair number of cars passing through the gprge. this made the greatest amount of traffic for some time on these roads. During the week the new bridge at Lilburn’s corner was opened. With the warm oppressive weather there has been an increase in the numbers of the white butterfly in the district. Cabbages well-formed before the end of the ’ cold weather in January seem to have withstood attacks very well, but others have suffered badly.

RAIN GENERALLY WELCOMED. HUIROA PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Rain last week was welcomed in the Huiroa district as dry weather had left many tanks .practically empty and had reduced the level of water in the streams 0. the lowest for many years. One of the largest crowds even accommodated in the Huiroa hall attended the dance held on March 23 by the Huiroa branches of the Farmers’ Union and W.D.F.U? Music was supplied by tthe Ambassadors, extras being played by MJsses Joyce Wallace and P. Stanford. Monte Carlo dances were won by Mrs. Foy and Mr. L. Chapman and Mias Winstone and partner. A competition was won by Mr. E. Hasler. The master of ceremonies was Mr. N. B. Fletcher.' Mr. I. Williams is spending a holiday at Auckland.

Mjss Stacey Ford and Mr. G* Ford have left for Christchurch to stay with Mr. and Mrs. Brewer. Mrs.- J. H. Stove and family and Mrs. A. H. Bowen are at Ngamotii beach for Easter.

' Mrs. G. Goldup is at Wanganui. Mrs. Mackay and Miss Mackay, Wellington, are staying with Mr. and Mrs. F. Taylor.

BUTCHER’S BANKINGS LOST. BELIEVED TAKEN FROM CAR. The sum of about £l5 was lost by Mr. J. T. Scott, butcher, Ngaere, on Thursday while his assistant was taking the money to the bank at Stratford. On the way the assistant stopped to deliver meat at a residence and on his return to the car he noticed that the canvas bag containing the money was missing. It is considered that the bag was taken during the assistant’s absence of a couple of minutes as it had been securely placed in the side-pocket of the vehicle. The loss was immediately reported to Mr. Scott, who informed the polige.

Gower’s free bus will leave the Eltham post / office at 7.45 p.m. Modem lighting effects and, “The Thousand and One Steps” are advertised as features of the Arabian Night dance to be held at Midhirst on Wednesday night. Curd’s bus will run from Stratford.

The Easter Monday attraction at Cardiff is the annual Easter ball, which will be held in the hall to-night. The Adelphi band will play and Stratford people may’ travel from the post office by White’s free bus, which will leave at 7.50 p.m.

Rugby urflon football of a high standard is expected when the leading club teams of Taranaki compete in the ten-a-side tournament at Tariki to-day. School Rugby, hockey and basketball games have been added to the programme. At the hall in the evening there will .be a dance and euchre with music by McNeill’s band. Free buses wfll tun from Stratford and Inglewood.

A special excursion train will leave New Plymouth at 8.50 a.m. and Waitara at 8.15 a.m. to-day for Ngaere gardens, where there will be a wide variety of attractions in a setting famous as ope of Taranaki’s beauty spots. Return train fare and admittance to the gardens will be 3s 9d for adults and 2s for children. Admittance to the gardens for those who do not travel by the train will be Is for adults and 6d for children. The return train leaves at 5.40 p.m. The Aotuhia Sports Club wfll hold a district picnic and sports to-day on the Tui domain,. Aotuhia (11 miles from Whangamomona). Luncheon and afternoon tea will be included with the admission, which is 2s 6d for. men, with ladies and children free. Anderson’s lorry will leave Whangamomona in the morning. Old pupils , of the Stratford Technical Hjgh School who have .not received invitations to the reunion to be held on Thursday night may obtain them by applying to the secretary, Mr. O. Lyons.
