CHATHAM WINS THE DONCASTER TARANAKI HORSES SCORE WELL SUCCESS OF HAWERA TROTTING / 'ruin i ii ' a ra 'I’HE outstanding performance of Saturday’s racing was that of Chatham at Randwick, when he carried the welter impost of 10.4 to victory in the Doncaster Handicap and beat the New Zealand horse Golden Wings by a head. At Ellerslie Jonathan won the Easter mile in great style, and Golden Hair continued her winning way by disposing of her two opponents in the Oaks in easy fashion. Taranaki horses had a good innings at Feilding, wherp Matorni, Silver Wings and Moatoa all won races. The principal events at this meeting fell to Grand Jury and Royal Hunting. The star turn in the trotting world, the big invitation mile at Addington, saw the Australian Walla Walla triumph over New Zealand’s best in brilliant fashion. The Hawera Trotting Club had a successful opening day, both the totalisator and the gate being improved. The principal event, the Hawera Trotting Cup, was won in runaway fashion by Smooger from the three-year-old Chancellor.

Anita Tame began very smartly and was soon piloting the field from Belinda King, Janke, Worthy Chief, Guy Mond and Oro’s Pride, who had made up hk ground quickly.’ There was little change running down the straight, but then Belinda King dashed to the front and led into the back, where Guymond made a great run on the outer and took command from Belinda King, Anita Fame, Worthy Chief and Oro’s Pride. Guymend was still in front at the turn for heme, followed by Anita Fame, Belinda King and Worthy Chief. Anita Fame was first to challenge the leader, but then Worthy Chief put in his claim. In a splendid finish Anita Fame just beat her stable-mate Worthy Chief by a head, with Guymend a similar distance away. Belinda King was a fair fourth, and then came Vesta Ray and Golden Oaks. Though the principal event, the H«wara Trotting Cup, fell to the Haweratrataed horse Smooger, the visiting contingent took most of the spoils, f. X Smith, the Takanini trainer, collecting three, and C. 8. Donald, Belfast, a like number. These two are among the Dominion’s leading roinsmen and they gave polished displays. After the cup race Mr. B. McCarthy, president of the club, congratulated the owner, Mr. A. Hobbs, and the trainer, J. ti Smith, on their meritorious win. He wu pleased, he said, , to see the Cup go to a Hawera man. The Winner had gained a popular victory Over a strong favourite. Mr. McCarthy apologised for the absence of Mr. J. R. Corrigan, and asked Mrs, A. J. Corrigan, one of the donors of the Cup, io present the trophy. From a good start Gumdigger was first to show out from Gunmetal, but down the back the order was Gumdigger, Chancellor, Belle o’ Mine, Free Logan and Gunmetal. Free Logan then moved up and at the far turn was showing out from Belle o’ Mine, Chanoellor and Gumdigger. Coming down the straight the first time Free Logan and Belle o’ Mine were still in front from Chancellor, with Smooger making a good run. Then , followed Gunmetal and. Gumdigger. Smooger continued his run and followed Free Logan into the back from Belle o’ Mine and Chancellor, who was pocketed. Smooger took command at the half-mile and Chancellor made his move on the outside. Smooger was four to five lengths clear at the far bend, where Chancellor ran into second place from Belle o’ Mine and Free Logan. From thence on the pair were the only ones in it, and Smooger, running on well, won by eight lengths from Chancellor, with Gumdigger a fair third, just ahead of Belle o’ Mine, Free Logan and Gunmetal.

Down the back Tasman Flight still held command from Tecla, but passing the five furlongs Guy Zolock and Blondie moved up, followed by Jester. Blondie had joined Tasman Flight with Tecla and Jester closest of the others. Blondie Was first into the straight from Jester and Tasman Flight and held his own to win by two lengths from Jester, who was four lengths in front of Tecla and Tasman Flight, who dead-heated for third. Running down the straight the first time Linella was still in charge, with Hard Words, Highland Derby, Donum and Le Chenault following. Highland Derby and Donum made forward moves, and passing the half-mile Highland Derby was just in front of Donum, with Linella and Hard Words close up. Highland Derby was first to turn for home, but Linella challenged on the rails. Just as this pair were fighting it out Donum came on the outside and won easily. Linella just beat Highland Derby for second, with Hard Words a good fourth.

All moved off well except Summertime, and Guy o’ Mine was soon bowling along in front with Welcome Guy, followed by Earl Bingen and Rustle, and a gap back to Wahnooka. This order was unchanged passing the post the first time, and along the back stretch Guy o’ Mine was still showing the way just ahead of Welcome Guy, Rustle and Wahnooka following at intervals. Rustle had moved up to Guy o’ Mine at the straight entrance, when Wahnooka could be seen making a run on the outside. Rustle finished best and beat Guy o’ Mine by half a length, with Welcome Guy four lengths away third, just in front of Earl Bingen. Wahnooka was fifth. STRATFORD HANDICAP (Harness). The form disclosed on Saturday should prove a good guide to spectators, but the presence of fresh horses in some of the classes will add to the interest of some of the contests. The Auckland and,Belfast reinsmen F. J. Smith and C. S. Donald, who had such a fine run of Success on Saturday, are again Strongly represented and their candidates promise to play an important part in the day’s sport, 11.50: TRIAL HANDICAP. Of £65.
