L. CATHRO HEADS LIST

QOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGUN TARANAKI TITLE TO BE DECIDED. . - i|£’RECORD NEW PLYMOUTH ENTRIES. ** T QUALIFYING ROUNDS PLAYED.

Flaying excellent golf, L. Cafhro, Seacliff, Wanganui, led the field after two Qualifying rounds of the annual tournaxnent for the Taranaki golf championship conducted by the New Plymouth Golf Club at Waiwakaiho on Saturday. He returned 77—76—153, six strokes better than the next man. The day was ideal for golf, but high score!'were the' general rule owing to the tricky nature of many of the greens, f f ’ . The field of 122 was rrecord.for the tournament, being greater by 20 than last year. Three players, W. B. Colbeck, Auckland, R. Wynn Kirkby, Wellington, and Imlay Saunders, Wanganui, all took pirt in the first Taranaki championship ju 1906. Twenty-five of the players are handicapped on six**or less, the number being unusual for a provincial championship, for a six rating entitles a player to entry in the New Zealand championship. Players in the tournament, represent clubs all over the North Island.

One of the steadiest players in New Zealand for a number of .years and unfortunate several times in n °t gaining higher honours, Cathro played steady if not brilliant golf throughout. Though he missed one or two fairly.,easy putts, his work on. the greens was generally good. His long game was admirably accurate, while his imperturbable nature saved him many shots where a less equable man might have crashed badly. Cathro, next to B. M. Silk, is the most difficult player at Wanganui to defeat, and he has shown several times that the young Kirk-Windeyer Cup man, brilliant though he is, has no great advantage over him.

Cathro’s morning card was: Out, 5,4, 4, 6, 5,4, 5,5, 3, 41; in, 5,4, 3,4, 2, 4, 5, 5,4, 36; total 77. In the afternoon his card read: Out, 4,5, 5,5, 3,4, 4,4, 3, 37; in, 5,4, 5,5, 3,5, 4,4, 4, 39; total 76. In the morning round Cathro had two birdies and at eleven of the other holes he played to par figures. He missed a short one for a five on the 385-yard 4th, but recorded a two at Moses. In the afternoon his inward score, With fives on four of the last six holes, was beginning to mount, but a sparkling finish with three fours including two birdies, kept his score down. A. E. Conway, New Plymouth; played really well in the morning for a 79, but he crashed in the afternoon, taking 84. The defending champion,. F. ‘ Quin, had rounds of 80 and 79,* sufficient', to put him in second place in the qualifying list A. E. Ekstedt, the Manawatu player, had steady rounds of 83 and is likely to improve during match play. Conway, Cathro and Ekstedt form the scratch men of the tournament. G. M. Chong played Steadily for his 81’s. H. W. Kirkby, New Plymouth, won the medal round in the afternoon with ridiculous ease, his score of 82—13—69, being well ahead of any others. His fine score, was not. sufficient, however, to place him among the elect in the championship, for he had a bad first round. In the Waiwakaiho handicap he is playing so steadily that he should have a reasonable chance. . I - The huge number of players resulted in another competition, the consolation handicap, being added. The starters were Messrs. H. Dempsey and H. L. Sanders, and the secretarial work was in the hands of .Messrs. J. H. Boon and S. M. White. Though tie greens were tricky, good work had been done on them by the greenkeepers,' Messrs. A. J. Sanders and J. Jeffries. The trickiness was due entirely to the recent spell. . Results are:— . Auckland, Last Night. The presence among the competitors of the New South Wales Kirk-Windeyer Cup team and the New Zealand nominees for the same event added very materially to the general interest taken in the Auckland provincial golf championship, the two qualifying rounds of which were played at. the. Titirangi Club’s links on Saturday. Five Australians participated but only two qualified, Dobson and Ruwald.

Horton and Silk, two of the Dominion’s Kirk-Windeyer nominees, finished in the first 16. The third, Homabrook, did a moderate round in the morning and tore up his afternoon card. The fourth New Zealand nominee, Wright, Dunedin, did not arrive at Auckland until to-day, and he therefore will not participate in the championship, but is expected to play in handicap matches to-morrow.

Apperly, the New South Wales captain, was in. bed on the previous day with influenza. This affected his morning play, and although he showed a big improvement in the afternoon, he just failed to qualify.
