AWATUNA NEWS

HARVEST FESTIVAL SERVICE. On Sunday afternoon the annual harvest festival service was held in the Presbyterian church when there was a large congregation. The Rev. Webb, Opunake, conducted the service and appropriate harvest festival hymns were sung by the congregation. Mrs. T. McCarrison presided at the organ. The church was decorated with flowers and there was a display of vegetables and fruit. Instead of the annual sale of produce afterwards a thanksgiving offering was taken up in the church and proved very successful. *nie following junior Red Cross members at Awatuna school have been presented with junior’ first aid certificates: Evelyn Lind, Ramsay Boyd, Roy Walker, Joe Parkes, Thelma Bankhead, Pat Bourke, Marjory Davison, Dora Niccolls, Molly Davison, Bessie Niccolls, Poppy Sangster, Alvina Betfridge, Willie Phillips and Murray Boyd. At Makaka school certificates were won by Joe Duckett, Jean Cuff and Sybil Cuff. Te Kiri school winners: Doris Dobbs, Audrey Wemyss, Kathleen Mulligan, Jack Crawford, Betty Clements, Walker Thomas, Mary Birkett, Ronald Death, Margaret Stewart, Joyce Pointon, Molly Huwiler, Edna, Pointon and Nola Pointon.

Last Wednesday afternoon a very enjoyable garden party was held at the home of Mrs. T. McCarrison to raise funds for the local ladies’ guild of the Presbyterian church. There was a. full attendance of members and a number of games and competitions were enjoyed. The winners were: Croquet, Mrs. M. Kedgley; quoits, Mrs. J. Johnson; naildriving, Mrs. J. Johnson (after tying with Mrs. Coxhead); shuttelcock, Mrs. J. Johnson; “conundrums,” Mrs. Coxhead; word-building, Mrs. Stewart. The hostess served a dainty afternoon tea on the lawn, and on the motion of the Rev. S. J. Webb, Mrs. McCarrison was heartily thanked for her hospitality and for the well organised afternoon. The sum of £1 4s was cleared for the guild funds. MAKAKA NEWS. Mr. Gray, senr., kindly donated a silver cup to the Makaka school for the best calf in the children’s competitions. The cup was won for this year by Peter Cassidy.
