POLAR GALES ENCOUNTERED
BEAR OF OAKLANDS’ VOYAGE. “WORST IN POLAR ANNALS.” By Telegraph—Pi ess Assn.—Copyright New York’, March 10. A message from the Byrd expedition on the Bear of Oakland states: — At noon to-day the ship was rolling heavily in a strong south-west gale and very rough seas. Since the departure from the Bay of Whales the ship has experienced a long series of terrific polar gales which would have spelled misfortune for a less sturdy vessel. The present weather is the worst recorded in Polar annals.
