CRICKET PREMIERSHIP

COUNTY COMPETITION ENDS TARURUTANGI VICTORIOUS. Tarurutangi with a score of 154 had the better of a drawn game against Tikorangi B (six for 52) at Tikorangi yesterday, and thus wins the Country Saturday competition by a margin of a' point from Urenui, which was the runner-up. The main credit for the score must go to Spence Giddy, who retired with 81 to his. credit, his brother Stan Giddy scoring 27, while Norman Giddy added 29. Tikorangi B was three men short, their places being filled by 8., A. and Vic. Foreman of the A team. Tikorangi B won the toss and sent Tarurutangi to the wickets. Stan and Spence Giddy opened to the bowling of A. Soffe and R. Hicks. Runs came slowly, the wicket being inclined to play tricks. The bowlers, too, had to be treated with respect, A. Soffe keeping a good length and nipping in a little from the off, while R. Hicks, aided by the wind, swerved considerably. Spence Giddy, who opened quietly, soon got into his stride and, monopolising the bowling, scored 32 of the first 40, which occupied 50 minutes. Stan Giddy then became more aggressive and despite changes of bawling the score mounted. At 83, of which he had made 27, Stan Giddy was smartly stumped. He had given a couple of earlier chances in the outfield.

Norm Giddy joined Spence Giddy and the pair were together at the luncheon adjournment, the score being 106, of which Spence had made 71, including one six and nine boundaries. On resuming Norm Giddy hit a beautiful six, and with the score at 132 Spence, who had made 81, was called in. It was a splendid effort and but for the very dead outfield would have been worth over a century. Norm Giddy went eight runs later for 29, and the remainder were quickly disposed of, the last seven wickets adding only 14 runs. Hicks bowled 15 overs for four wickets and 26 runs, while A. Soffe bowled 19 overs for five wickets and 58 runs.

With 65 minutes left to bat, Tikorangi opened quietly to the bowling of L. Bishop and Spence Giddy. R. Hicks was well caught at mid-off by R. Hoskin off L. Bishop with the score at 15. The next three wickets added only 10 runs. E. Smith assisted B. Foreman to add 12 for the next wicket before the latter, who had opened, was bowled by Spence Giddy for 13. Vigorous batting by A. Foreman, who was undefeated for 18, including a boundary and a . six, assisted by.M. Sarten not out 6, raised the total to 52 for six wickets when stumps were drawn. The details are:— ' TARURUTANGI.
