FROM TRACK AND STABLE

THE RACING AT TE RAPA.

GAY SHEILA A GOOD FILLY. LION HEART VERY PROMISING. • (By “Hurry On.”) Though doubtless not what it was in the boom days, racing is still on a firm footing in the Waikato. The big crowd present at Te Rapa on Thursday was an eye-opener to a Taranaki visitor. There was plenty of spirit in the betting and the system of buying win and place tickets at the same windows was working well. This method is only just being properly understood, but the committee is strongly in its favour and there is little talk of a change. The Waikato club has a capable set of officials and confidently expects steady progress from now onward. Exit Paganelli. Old Paganelli went wrong on the eve of the Waikato meeting and it was stated that the racecourse has seen the last of this fine son of Lord Quex. In his day he was one of the fastest horses seen in New Zealand and put -up some great performances under big imposts. Among his wins were two victories in the Taranaki Stakes.' He made one trip to Australia, where he was beaten by a nose in the Warwick Stakes by that great horse Amounis. Though six furlongs was perhaps his best distance he won a Thompson Handicap, beating-,, a pair of good horses in Bright Glow and Pegaway

Proving a Disappointment Prolyxo had been working so well at Cambridge that her owner-trainer considered he had a great chance in the Highweight at Te Rapa on the opening day. She was always in a handy position and when she moved up to King Win and Limex at the distance she looked likely to score, but her weight told its tale over the last bit and Limex just outstayed her. Prolyxo has disappointed so frequently this season that it would occasion no surprise should she be retired to the stud next year. She being a full sister to Ammon Ra her future as a stud matron would be watched with interest.

Gay Sheila Good Filly. What a good game filly Gay Sheila is! She appeared slightly sore when doing her preliminary for the President’s Handicap at Te Rapa and did not seem to be comfortable in the early stages. Once' her rider asked her for an effort in the straight she responded in great style and finishing splendidly just beat Sinking Fund in the last few strides. It was a fine performance for a three-year-old filly with 9.0 on her back and stamps the daughter of Gay Sheila as a filly well above the' average. She figures among those still engaged in the Great Northern Oaks, and all going well in the interval she is likely to start a solid favourite. Reminiscent of Gray.

D’Artagnan dead-heated with Saltspray in the Beerescourt Hack Handicap on the opening day at Te Rapa, just getting up in the last stride. Nevertheless it might not be wise to overestimate this performance as his success was due in no small measure to the vigorous riding of L. J. Ellis. This rider has vigour at the finish, but seldom has he been seen to more advantage than on this occasion. He drove D’Artagnan forward over the last 100 yards to bridge the gap in a manner reminiscent of Hector Gray. It provided the crowd with a rare thrill and was a fitting finale to a great day’s racing. Was Unlucky.

Diagano had been responsible for a great half mile at Te Rapa just prior to the meeting- and his connections were confident that the chestnut would run a great race in the President’s Handicap. He appeared to be in great order and strode out boldly in his preliminary. However, any chance he had was extinguished early when Lucidus chopped gcross in front of him and he lost fully six lengths. He put. in a good run in the straight and at one stage/appeared likely to fill a place but weakened over the last 50 yards. But for the interference he would have made things interesting for Gay Sheila and Sinking Fund. He is very well at present and in future will be entitled to respect event in the best company.

Promising Two-Year-Old. At Te Rapa track watchers have a big opinion of the two-year-old lion Heart He was given his first outing in the Juvenile Handicap on Thursday, and though he did not win he showed that he has big, possibilities. He did not move off well and was inclined to run about over the first furlong, but McKenzie then had him properly balanced and proceeded to send him along. He certainly did move. With a great burst of pace he ran up to the leaders at the straight entrance but then ran right off the course. He lost many lengths and jnost people forgot all about him until he appeared on the scene again with a fast run into third place. In many ways it was an impressive performance. He showed that he possesses wonderful speed, and then to come on again after running off the course demonstrated that the colt has courage.. More will be heard of, Lion Heart, and he may yet prove one of the best of his age. He is a bay colt by Gay Shield from the Nassau mare Shehang, thus being a full brother to Tavem Knight. A Muddling Race.

Hie Storey Cup. at Te Rapa on Thursday was a peculiarly run race. There was not a great deal of pace on early and good stayers but usually slow beginners like Master Brierly. and Gibraltar found themselves close up to the leaders. Half a mile from home Voitre on Aga Khan suddenly switched the pace on much in the same way as he did on Carfex in the Taranaki Cup. The riders of the other could not afford to let the Aga get too far away and they all set off in pursuit together. The result was a scramble for about half a furlong and the main sufferer was Knight of Australia. Master Brierly and Gibraltar were well beaten nearly a furlong from home but over the last 100 yards Ellis got Knight of Australia clear and sat down to ride one of those finishes for which he is becoming well known. He fairly lifted his mount forward but the post arrived too soon for him. Some considered Ellis was to blame for having his horse in such a position at the straight entrance, but it was not his fault. It is unusual to receive such a bad passage in a long straight like that at Te Rapa. Since the Te Aroha meeting C. Jackson has only been sprinting Aga Khan, and this preparation not only suited him but turned out to be ideal for the race. Oriel Rehandicapped. As a result of his win in the Huntly Hack Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday Oriel has been rehandicapped at 9.3 for the President’s Hack Cup at Opunake. Fancied Runner. Nothing at Riccarton is galloping better than Argentic. His six furlongs in lm 13 2-5 s on Saturday morning was a brilliant effort. He promises to strip a fit horse in the Thompson Handicap on Friday. He has not been too well served on the score of horsemanship lately, but L. J. Ellis informed the writer at Hamilton that he had accepted the mount. Mr.

G. M. Currie was anxious to secure Ellis’ service for Pomp but he had previously made his engagement for Argentic. Addition to J. Fryer’s Team. During the progress of the recent Waikato meeting a patron of the Hawera trainer J. Fryer completed the lease of a two-year-old filly by Gay Shield—Kitty Barlowe from Mr. Clive Matthews. This filly will be the first of the progeny of Gay Shield to be trained in Taranaki. Jockey’s Premiership. Following is the position of the leading jockeys on the premiership list to date:— K. Voitre 49 L. J. Ellis 46 W. J. Broughton 43 H.. N. Wiggins 37 P. S. Atkins 35 A. E. Ellis i 32 A. H. Eastwood .... 32 B. H. Morris 29 R. Reed 22 N. R. McKenzie 21 A. Russell 19 H. Goldfinch . 18 J. Dooley 17 S. Tremain 17 S. Wilson 17 L. Dulieu 16 M. Kinvan 16 R. W. McTavish 16 R. Marsh 16 W. E. Pine 15 E. A. Keesing . 15 G. W. Duncan 15 G. Humphries 14 L. G. Morris 14 ABOUT THE HAWERA STABLES FORM AT THE WAIKATO MEETING. DUNCAN’S BUSY WEEK. (By “Childers.”) The five Hawera horses taken to Waikato raced fairly well to obtain two wins in seven starts worth £363. Aga Khan secured £220 of this and Oriel the remaining £143. Aga Khan ran a fine race to account for the main event on the opening day. Once again he won in his usual style—by leading from start to finish. There appears to be no doubt that the Chief Ruler gelding is seen to advantage when ridden in this manner, for he has won practically all his races by being in front for the full distance. Owner-trainer C. Jackson is having a good season with Aga Khan and Diagano for the win of the former last week was the seventh registered by the pair since Christmas. From now on they will find it harder, but nevertheless they should more than pay their way. « • Oriel was given very little fast work between the Te Aroha and Waikato meetings; consequently he was in need of a race when he failed on the opening day. He made amends by winning handsomely on Saturday after having none the best of passages during the race. The son of Nigger Minstrel appreciated the longer distance for, like most of his sire’s stock, he is a bom stayer. Ownertrainer J. Fryer is very keen on securing the canteen of cutlery which is to be given to the winner of the President’s Hack at Opunake on Saturday, and provided he is not severely rehandicapped Oriel will take his place in the field for this event.

Track Too Hard for Gibraltar. Gibraltar once again found the ground against him, as the going was particularly hard. Owing to his increasing list of failures Gibraltar is steadily dropping in the weights, and the first time he strikes a suitable track he will take a power of beating.

A line could not be obtained on the form of Stanchion as he fell at the first fence in his only start. The mishap was caused by interference by another horse rather than a bad jump on the part of Stanchion. He received a cut on the inside of the arm of his leg which prevented him from running on the second day. He should not be long off the active list. Little notice need also be taken of the defeat of Diagano. Diagano was produced on the opening day of the meeting only to be hopelessly left. He will not be raced again until Easter.

Opunake and Wellington. Twelve Hawera horses were accepted for Opunake and five for Wellington. The Wellington candidates are to be given their final gallops this morning and will leave for Trentham to-morrow.

Although he is showing no signs of lameness in his work, One Whetu is suffering from a leg injury which may prevent him from starting at Opunake. The connections of Silver .Wings decided against racing the filly at Opunake as the distance was considered to be too far for her. She is to be. taken to the Manawatu meeting next week, when she will start in a handicap two-year-old event on the concluding day. She will be ridden by W, E. Pine, and produced fit and well she should trouble the opposition. Half-Sister to Whenuakura.

An interesting youngster at the tracks on Saturday morning, was the yearling filly in J. Brown’s stable by Captain Bunsby out of Silver Link. Thus she is a half-sister to the champion two-year-old of the spring, Whenuakura. She is a shapely brown filly, well grown and of the type that comes to hand early. M. Conway’s pair Benedictine and Miss

Louvain, showing signs of lameness, have both been eased up. It is unlikely that cither will be required to race again before the Egmont May meeting. Duncan’s Riding. Oriel’s victory on Saturday gave G. Duncan his sixteenth winning ride for the season. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be busy days for the Hawera apprentice, as he • will attend the Ohinemuri, Wellington and Opunake meetings respectively on those days. At Ohinemuri he is engaged to ride Prolyxo, Gay Sister, Lucidus, Calcutta and Lia Fail. At Wellington his mounts will include Red Sun, Ruri, Ingenuity and Whyte Melville. MANAWATU MEETING.
