PROVINCIAL CROQUET
PROGRESS OF TOURNAMENT. MANY SEMI-FINALS REACHED. The Taranaki croquet tournament was continued at New Plymouth yesterday in good weather. Good progress was made, and it is expected the finals will be completed this afternoon, possibly late. Excellent form has already been shown in the games and particularly the semi-finals, and very keen matches are anticipated to decide the finals. One finalist and a number of semi-finalists have already been found. The results of yesterday’s play are:— Level Singles—Bisques 5-7. Mrs. Codd won by default from Mrs. Hollows. Mrs. Bellringer 26 v. Mrs. Rowlands 12. Mrs. Goss 26 v. Miss Bates 21. Mrs. Codd 26 v. Mrs. Fuller 20. Mrs. Bellringer 26 v. Mrs. Goss 20. Levels—Bisques 2} to 4J Mrs. Martin 26 v. Mrs. Gibbs 21. Ladies’ First Life. Mrs. Clark 26 v. Mrs. Harvey 3. Mrs. Tingey 26 v. Mrs. Henderson 8. Mrs. Clark 26 v. Mrs. Gibbs 3 Mrs. Martin won by default from Mrs. Roffe. Mrs. Tingey 26 v. Mrs. Clark 15. Ladies’ Second Life. Mrs. Tingey 26 v. Mrs. Ward 5. Mrs. Kay 26 v. Mrs. Clark 19. Championship Doubles. Final. A. J. Gibbs and Mrs. Masters 26 v. Mesdames Henderson and Clark 24. Handicap Doubles, Semi-final. Mrs. King (4J) and Mrs. Hollows (7) 26 v. Mrs. Lowery (2) and Miss Bates (5) 12. Final: Mesdames Codd (5) and McDonald (6j) 26 v. Mesdames King (4j) and Hollows (7) 24. The final was a most interesting game, as the closeness of the scores indicate. The hitting-in of both Mrs. Codd and Mrs. King was exceptionally good. Mrs. Codd was given a baulk ball, by means of which the partnership was able to win. Handicap jingles—Bisques 6 and Under. Semi-finals: A. J. Gibbs (,-i) 26 v. Championship Singles—Best two out of three games. Mrs. Lowery 21—26, 26—11, 26—21 v. Mrs. Harvey 26—21, 11—26, 21—26. Mrs. Bock 23—26, 26—12, 26—18 v. Mrs. Wellings 26—23, 12—26, 18—26. The following games have been arranged for this morning:— New Plymouth lawns, 9 a.m.: No. 1 green, Mrs. Masters v. Mrs. Martin, ladies’ first life; Mrs. Martin v. Mrs. King, levels, bisques 2J-4J. No. 3 green: Mrs. Lowery v. Mrs. McKay, open championship; Mrs. Bock to play the winner. West End lawns, 8 a.m.: Mrs. Henderson v. Mrs. Gibbs, winner to play Mrs. Tingey, open championship. Central lawns, 9 a.m.: Mrs. Honeyfield v. Mrs. Codd, levels, bisques 5-7; winner to play Mrs. Bellringer.
