ARTIFICIAL SCENT
FOX hunting scandal. QUARRY SMEARED WITH OILS. London, Feb. 26. Resentment is spreading in hunting circles at the growing practice of “touching-up” foxes by smearing them with aniseed, turpentine and other odorous oils,. after which they are released in front of hounds. . . The result is a brief mad run in which there is no element .of sport. Moreover, artificial scent renders hounds unable subsequently to follow natural scent. Major Gatacre, master of the East Devon Foxhounds, the latest sufferers, says apparently some people think' it clever to catch and doctor a fox. They may have a grudge against the hunt, or merely want to boast that they were responsible for a fast gallop. Mr. J. W. Fitzwilliam, secretary of the British .Field, Sports Society, says it is a foul business, and gives the fox no chance.
