WHEAT FARMERS’ DEBTS
“£150,000,000 IN AUSTRALIA” EARLY ADVANCES REQUIRED . MACHINERY DILAPIDATED TREND TO SHEEP IN WEST By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 10.35 p.m. Sydney, March 5. Giving evidence at the inquiry into the wheat industry Mr. C. A. Hawker, former Minister of Commerce, declared that the debt structure of the wheat industry of the Commonwealth was £150,000,000. He added that unless mortgagees advanced money to the farmers to enable them to purchase new machinery or recondition existing plant they would collapse in the near future. Everywhere machinery needed replacement. Mr. Hawker told of the dilapidated state of the wheat belt of Western Australia, where thousands of farms were abandoned. He gave instances of inefficiency being forced upon farmers and expressed the opinion that numerous farmers were turning their attention to sheep-raising.
