GALLANTRY OF A NURSE
PREVENTED A CATASTROPHE. TURNED OFF BURNING CYLINDER. British Wireless. Rugby, March 3. The gallantry of a Middlesex Hospital nurse, Dorothy Thomas, has been rewarded by the medal of the civil division of the Order of the British Empire. While a large oxygen cylinder was being charged in an anaesthetic room an explosion occurred and the oxygen caught fire, the flames shooting out of the room in an alarming manner. Nurse Thomas, after removing ether and shutting the doors to localise the fire, re-entered the anaesthetic room and at great risk turned off the tap of the burning cylinder, which was liable to explode any moment. Her bravery and coolness prevented a serious catastrophe.
