The condition of Mr. J. S. Connett, who has been seriously ill in hospital at Auckland, was reported yesterday to have shown improvement. The Taranaki County Council yesterday passed a resolution expressing regret at the continued illness cf the chairman, Mr. J. S. Connett, and the hope that he would have a speedy recovery.

Messrs J. S. Connett and S. Vickers were yesterday re-elected to represent the Taranaki County Council on. the North Committee of the Egmont National Park Board.

Mr. Leslie Lefeaux, governor-designate of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, is a passenger by the Rangitane which will arrive at Auckland from England on March 15, the Press Association reports.

Captain R. C. Hammond, Auckland, Messrs J. A. Smith, Levin, Clifton Bingham, Christchurch, and E. G. Lane, Oamaru, are among the guests at the Criterion Hotel, New Plymouth. The loss the club had suffered by the accidental death of two of its most prominent members, Messrs R. L. Powell and K. H. Bedford, was mentioned at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Hunt Club last night. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives was passed. Mr. Robert Ramsay sen. died on Friday while en route from London to Australia aboard the Strathaird, the Press Association reports. Mr. Ramsay was chairman of directors of the Australian and New Zealand organisation Harrison Ramsay Pty. Ltd. from the inception of the company. Until recently he was a member of the Melbourne board of directors of the Commercial Union Assurance.

Archdeacon A. W. Fitchett has accepted nomination as the Bishop of Dunedin, states a Press Association message. He will remain vicar of the Roslyn parish and will occupy the vicarage. The stipend is to be devoted to provide assistance for a parish priest and to defray certain other costs. This arrangement has been made owing to the revenue from the bishopric endowment fund being insufficient for the new bishop to accept office and take up residence at the see house.

Miss H. Calder, assistant clerk at the Taranaki County office for the past eight years, has resigned her position, having accepted an appointment with tire Audit Department. The resignation was accepted with regret at yesterday’s meeting of the council, the acting-chairman, Cr. S. Vickers, and othex- councillors speaking in appreciative terms of her work. The resignation is to take effect on March 31. Miss Calder is to be granted leave of absence from March 24.

A notable incident of the annual meeting of the Taranaki Hunt Club last night was the retirement of Mr. A. H. Halcombe, Urenui, from the position of master, which he had filled with distinction ever since the inception of the hunt 27 years ago. Mr. Halcombe retains the position of president of the club, but under medical advice will not be able to follow the hounds this year. Mr. W. T. Joll, Waitara, deputy-master for several years, was unanimously elected to the position last night. The Hon. H. H. Addington, a retired British army officer, who after residing for nearly 20 years in New Zealand has been absent for four and a-half years, returned by the Monowai yesterday, states a Wellington Press Association message. He said he was away longer than he intended, but the depression had so affected his interests that it had not been xvorth while to come sooner. Things now appeared to be picking up and he had come to settle some private matters. He might stay two years. He is the second son of the late Viscount Sidmouth. " "
