GRETNA GREEN
FORTUNE FROM SMITHY. DEATH OF THE OWNER. London, Feb. 18. Hugh Mackie, who was originally a owner of the famous Gretna Green smithy and five farms, has died at the age of 84 years at Gretna House. "' Mr. Mackie had been associated with Gretna Green since 1869, when, witnessing an anvil marriage, he determined to buy the property and transform it into a show place. He accomplished this when a prosperous farmer in 1904, forming his family into a company to conduct its affairs.
The company received over £50,000 a year by charging sixpence apie’ce to visit the smithy, where 300 marriages have been celebrated annually in the past six years. The officiating “blacksmith,” Richard Rennison, expects a record rush at the coming Easter.
