FIVE SWIMMING RECORDS

TARANAKI SENIOR TITLES GOOD STANDARD AT HAWERA. J. NEVILLE, RYAN AND CLARKE. MISS CARNCROSS’ TWO RECORDS. Despite postponement to an unsuitable night from the New Plymouth point of view and bad weather, the Taranaki senior swimming championships at Hawera last night were successful. Five records were broken and the standard of competition in all events was high. The new records are:— 220 yards men: J. Neville (New Plymouth) 2m. 44 2-ss. 100 yards ladies: Miss V. Camcross (Eltham) Im. 19 2-ss. 150 yards backstroke, men: J. Ryan (New Plymouth) 2m. 21 3-ss. 100 yards breaststroke, men: F. Clarke (Hawera) Im. 22 1-as. 50 yards ladies: Miss V. Camcross (Eltham) 34’1-ss. A large number of North Taranaki swimmers, including H. St. George, holder of two titles, did not take part The North v. South relay resulted in a win for the South team, the North being, well below strength. Similarly the South, won the water polo match by 7 goals to 0. Hawera did its worst in the way of weather. Following an unusually cold day light rain started just before the first event. There was a surprisingly good attendance considering the weather, but there were several defections among the entrants. There wdre only two starters in the 220 yards, J. Blyth, half-mile champion, and J. Neville, mile champion. They swam the first 100 yards together slowly, ■when Neville showed out a little. Blyth •was not swimming as well as usual, and Neville,, swimming very well, went away to win comfortably by 12 yards. Blyth s form was disappointing. At the end of the firsts 50 yards, done in 365, Miss Camcross had a narrow lead from the title-holder, Miss Donald, in the ladies’ 100 yards event. She went ahead fast in the third lap. Miss Donald came at her when they turned for home, and half-way doWn ’the-baths they were level, but she could not sustain her sprint, Miss Camcross going on to win by three yards.. The ladies’ backward headers off the low board were all fairly good but the new high board seemed to worry all of them a little at least.' Miss Smith had the best optional dive. Misses Murray (title-holder) and Wickham got-an early start with nearly perfect back dives, but Miss Wickham’s standard deteriorated, while Miss Murray had the best header off the high board. • Misses Smith and Black improved on the later dives. At the end of the men’s 75 yards Ryan was leading Davies by three yards, with Griffen well back and Blyth out of it. Ryan went on strongly to forge ahead of Davies and win by 12 yards, with Griffen a similar distance back. Davies’ style of using both arms simultaneously interested the spectators.

In the men’s, diving the title-holder, Oliver, did a very good Isander, while in his other dives he was just a shade better than the other competitors. His diving was polished. Williams was a little disappointing. Misses Kelsen and Smith were the only starters in the ladies’ backstroke. Miss Kelsen, swimming a slow and powerful stroke, led at half-way by three yards. Though apparently tiring she held this lead to the finish. •, . <:/ Anderson had the best start in the men’s 50 yards and touched first. Haughton shot ahead,' swimming beautifully and turning well to lead Anderson home. Anderson fouled a line but was within a yard at the finish, with Robson a similar distance back. -

Clarke-swam well to break the Taranaki record for the breaststroke, but had only two yards to spare from Richardson at the finish. Tarrant was three yards behind. Miss Camcross won the ladies’ 50 yards easily by three yards. The only other starters, Misses Donald and Robertson, finished together. . .

Milne swum an excellent race in the 100 yards, and in an exciting finish was beaten by the fast young swimmer Neville by only two yards. They swam the first 50 yards together in 31s, but Milne dropped back in the third lap. Miss Wickham showed a good easy style to win the ladies’ breaststroke by about four yards from Miss Seaver. She finished very-strongly. . • ; In the flying squadron Hawera won comfortably by about ten yards. The feature of the race was that East End ran Stratford to a touch for second place. There were only the three starters. The results are:—
