Feature picture, “Up for the Derby.” ABOVE THE AVERAGE QUALITY OF “ROME EXPRESS.” “Rome Express,” which has been hailed as the best British picture of last year, begins its New Plymouth season at Everybody’s Theatre to-day. It can be recommended to readers as entertainment above the average. “Rome Express” concerns the happenings on the train journey between Paris and Rome, and into the hours of the night of travel is packed plenty of excitement. A thief fleeing from his accomplices with a stolen “old master,” a bullying millionaire and his secretary, a film actress who is tired of the fuss of her work, a ruthless criminal, a couple who are running away together; these are the principal characters of “Rome Express,” and they become involved in a story which has much drama and humour, and which is well told. The large cast includes a band of international stars, at the head of whom are Esther Ralston, the American actress; Conrad Veidt, who has a European reputation for his work in German films; Harold Huth, Donald Calthrop, a fine English actor; Joan Barry, Gordon Harker, Hugh Williams and Sir Cedric Hardwicke.

OPERA AT NEW PLYMOUTH ' The J. C. Williamson New Comic Opera Company will present “Floradora” at New Plymouth on March 27 and “The Arcadians” on March 28. Anna Q. Nilsson’s Debut Anna Q. Nilsson is to make her talkie debut with Paul Muni in Warners’ “The World Changes.” She has also been tested by M.-G.-M. for. an important part. Although well-known in silent films, Miss Nilsson has not appeared on the screen since 1928, when she was injured severely in a riding accident.

“SECOND-HAND WIFE” SOON SALLY EILERS AND BELLAMY. Sally Eilers and Ralph Bellamy are starred in “Second Hand Wife,” coming to Hawera next week. It is the story of a big business man who, when neglected by his fashionable wife, falls in love with his secretary. “Second Hand Wife,” is one of Kathleen Norris’ latest novels. Terrier Slacks on the Job. Herbert Mundin is provoked at Jean, his Scottie, who became a mother recently. “I promised puppies to various people,” he says, “and she didn’t provide me with enough to go around.” “How many puppies arrived?” he was asked. “Four.” “And how many have you promised ?” “Thirty-eight.”
