Cultured pearls sell for about half the price of natural pearls, but technical experts using chemicals, X-rays and ultra-violet rays have been unable to detect any difference between them. Radium is now used to photograph defects in steel posts and beams up to lOin. in thickness. Exposures require from 20 to 30 hours, this length of time being necessary for the rays to pass through the steel and register all imperfections on the film.
