EAST COAST RAILWAY LINE
MOVEMENT FOR COMPLETION SECTION TO WANTED. deputation to government, resolution OF COMMITTEE. « By Telegraph—Press Association. Wairoa, Last Night. The general committee in connection with the completion of the East Coast Railway from Napier to Gisborne met at Wairoa to-day. The discussions were not open to the Press but after lengthy deliberation the following resolution was carried unanimously. "After thorough investigation and consideration of the question of. the completion of the East Coast Railway the committee is of the opinion that representations should be made to the Government immediately to complete the Napier-Waikokopu section.” A deputation consisting of the mayors of Hastings, Napier, Wairoa and Gisborne, with Messrs. Richmond and Chadwick representing the freezing industry, is to proceed to Wellington at the earliest possible date to put arguments in favour of the completion of the line before the Government.
Though the decision may prevent Poverty Bay being linked up for some time the Gisborne delegates heartily supported the proposal as they realised that the only chance of securing the railway connection was by having the line completed to Waikokopu in the meantime. This was taken as a strong indication that every effort would be made to complete the line before considering having the work carried out by private enterprise, which does not appear to meet with favour by the committee.
