ELECTRIC LIGHT SPORTS

CARNIVAL AT NEW PLYMOUTH GOOD FIELDS COMPETE IN RACES. MISS CLARK SHINES IN SPRINTS. MILE EVENT PROVES EXCITING. The track was heavy at the Pukekura Park last night, when the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club held an electric light carnival. Competitors were in large numbers from the New Plymouth, Stratford and Eltham clubs, while there were also several Opunake and Hawera representatives. Conditions were fine but cold. The attendance of spectators was fair. Several Taranaki and West Coast titleholders participated, but, excepting Miss Clark, the sprinter, were not seen to advantage. F. G. Wodward and J. A. Pankhurst shared the sprinting honours, while R. L. Hains and H. L. Thomson were also in fo.rm. S. A. Black was a poor fourth in the 440 yards event, but he conceded 45' yards to the winner, A. Innes. R. Gruszning had five yards to spare from W. Wilson at the end of the 880 yards. Probably the most interesting race of the evening was the mile, which was won by W. Wilson after a slashing final lap. Wilson held off a strong challenge by V. Hodgson by two yards at the tape. Miss Clark ran as the champion she is. After taking her 75 yards heat' with ease she clinched the final by a yard margin. Conceding up to 12 yards in the 100 yards event, she was beaten by inches only for- first place. Allowing for fairly generous handicaps, S. G. -Dinniss showed good form to win both the broad jump and the hop, step and jump., G. Sullivan, as usual, was prominent, and his two seconds to Dinniss from scratch were commendable. GOOD FIELDS \OF CYCLISTS. Especially good entries were received in the cycling events, and close finishes resulted in the mile and three-mile events. Charteris, the west coast threemile title-holder, started in all three races but was unplaced in one and retired from the other two. Riders on easy marks took the places, R. Rundle having a particularly clear win in tire two-mile event.

The New Plymouth No. 1 team finished two yards ahead of Stratford in an exciting mixed relay race. Miss Clark made a fast run in the final distance. Five teams competed. As there were only two entries, the 100 yards secondary schools championship race was postponed.
