ROUGH TASMAN CROSSING

NIAGARA MEETS STOBM. GALE AND BEAM SEAS. Exceptionally rough weather was experienced by the Royal Mail liner Niagara, which arrived at Auckland from Sydney on Monday morning. Shortly after her departure from Sydney last Friday the vessel encountered a strong gale and for about 20 hours had to steam at reduced speed—at times dead slow. Strong winds and a heavy beam sea were encountered for almost the whole of the trip. “It was typically bad Tasman weather,” said Captain T. V. Hill. “The wind was from the north-east and reached a velocity of from 40 to 50 miles an hour. There were beam seas and strong winds practically all the way across the Tasman and some of the passengers were not seen very often in the dining saloon. However, the ship behaved well and there was no damage at all.” Several passengers said that, although the weather had been unpleasantly rough, the Niagara had shown herself to be an excellent sea boat.
