REMARKABLE PERFORMANCE
BOY WINS PROFICIENCY. SIX MONTHS AWAY FROM STUDIES. A remarkable scholastic performance was put up on Monday, when Gavin Hatfield, aged 13, a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Hatfield, Bulteel Street, New Plymouth, and a pupil of the West End school, passed the proficiency examination. On August 7 last year the boy was found near the Sanders Park sportsground suffering as the result of an accident from a fractured skull. At the hospital it was ascertained that besides his skull injury he had suffered severe injuries all over the body. For some time he lay very weak, and after discharge from the hospital he was sent to recuperate at Wellington. During the six months that the boy had been away from school he had, except for the last week, had absolutely no opportunities of study. Even during the* last week his work had been light, so that his performance in passing, the examination, which had been specially arranged, was all the more remarkable.
