CHAMPIONSHIP SWIMMING

HAWERA CARNIVAL TO-NIGHT. PROSPECTS FOR MEETING. With most of the best swimmers of Taranaki competing, the provincial senior swimming championships at the Hawera baths this evening promise to be fully up to, if not better than, the high standard of former years. Championship competitions seem always to hold greater excitement for the. spectator than ordinary handicap events, and with the wealth of entries for to-night's carnival, it appears likely that spectators will have all the excitement they wish. On both- sides, Taranaki’s best swimmers will be competing. In the women’s events, for instance, there is Miss V. Carncross, Eltham, An 18-year-old girl for whom great things were prophesied by the Australian champion, Miss Frances Bult. Some time ago Miss Camcross set' a record for the 50 years, and on her general style and the improvements of recent months, she appears to be the most promising lady Taranaki has turned but. Her path to success tonight will be no primrose one, however, for ■ several other- . competitors have shown first-class form at recent carnivals. It is on the men’s side that most interest will lie. With H. St. George, Wai-tara,-record holder for the 100 yards and one of the most difficult men to defeat in Taranaki, T. J. Haughton, the crack Stratford sprinter whose hydro-planing style follows the best traditions, S. Anderson, Hawera speed merchant, and many others in the fields, the events should not lack for interest. In addition, J. Neville, whose brilliant win in the mile championship on Saturday was a triumph, and B. Milne, Fitzroy, two of the most promising youngsters in the province, will be taking part. A special flying squadron event and a ten-a-side relay race between the North and South will add interest to the carnival. A North v. South polo match will be played, at'the end. ADDITIONAL HANDICAPS. Further entries have been received for the 50 yards handicap event at Hawera to-night. They have been handicapped as follow: G. Chamberlain (Eltham) Is., J. Henderson (East; End) 25., R, McFarlane (East End) 25., C. Vincent (Eltham) 35.;. A. W. Henderson (East End) 4s. : ' ' •
