AUCKLAND’S ANNIVERSARY
SHIPS “DRESSED” FOR EVENT. PICTURESQUE SCENE IN HARBOUR. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 29. Auckland’s Anniversary Day was celebrated in perfect weather. The radiant sunshine is tempered by a mild north-easterly breeze, just strong enough to suit hundreds of craft which participated in the traditional Anniversary Day regatta. There was a continuous stream of people this morning to the wharves, where they embarked in large and small craft for trips in the harbour or Hauraki Gulf. The cruiser H.M.S. Diomede, anchored in mid-harbour, is acting as flag-ship for the regatta. AU overseas ships in port dressed ship for the occasion, and the German barque Magdalene Vinnen, looked especially picturesque. There were large attendances at the Takapuna races and the Auckland tennis championship finals, while many went to Waiheke for the New Zealand tourist trophy motor-cycle contest.
