TENNIS AND GENERAL ITEMS. The results of ladies’ doubles played at Radnor Road during the week are as follow: Mrs. J. Vickers and Miss B. Hunt defeated Mrs. W. Vickers and Mrs. Hunt 6—2, Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Askew defeated Mrs. J. Vickers and Miss Hunt 6—2, Mrs. Hunt and Mrs. W. Vickers defeated Miss I. Vickers and Miss O. Rookes 6—4; Mrs. Reid and Miss J. Rookes had a bye. The draw is: Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Askew play Mrs. W. Vickers and Mrs. Hunt, Mrs, J. Vickers and Miss Hunt play Mrs. Reid and Miss J. Rookes, Miss I. Vickers and Miss O. Rookes a bye, No combined doubles matches were played, most of the men being harvesting at present. The final draw in the first round is as follows: S. Reid and Mrs. Reid play G. Vickers and Mrs. Hunt, P. Anderson and Mrs. Anderson play E. Fear and Miss Vickers, W. Vickers and Miss Hunt play C. Kelly and Mrs. J. Vickers, W. Rookes and Miss J. Rookes play A. Mapp and Miss Algie, R. Vickers and J. B. Hunt play S. Carter and Miss O. Rookes, H. Vickers and Mrs. W. Vickers play M. Askew and Mrs. Askew. Prompt Rescue of Stack. When Mr. W. Rookes lit a heap of dry ragwort beside a standing rimu on his mother’s property he little thought of the resulting consequences. A strong north wind was blowing and when Mr. Rookes returned from haymaking at a neighbour’s farm it was to find several stumps ablaze, among them being a tall standing rimu beside which was a recently erected haystack. Finding it- impossible to extinguish the blaze, Mr. Rookes with the prompt assistance of neighbours removed the stack from the danger zone into the next paddock, and by nightfall had it re-erected in its new position. Personal Items. Mrs. M. Davis has returned from spending a few days at New Plymouth, where her granddaughter is very ill. Mrs. Rookes is spending a holiday with Mrs. Pentelow, New Plymouth.
