FAREWELL AT ELTHAM. PRESENTATION TO MR. J. C. WALSH. Members of the Eltham Swimming and Athletic Clubs gathered last night to bid farewell to one of the prominent members of both clubs, Mr. J. C. Walsh, who is leaving to take a position at Nelson. In making a presentation of a set of cut glass goblets and a fountain pen from the members of both clubs Mr. A. G. Whiting expressed the regret felt at the loss of a valuable member. As president of the swimming club Mr. Walsh had helped to place the sport on a good footing, he said. As far as the athletic club was concerned Mr. Walsh had assisted in many directions, and the speaker did not know how they would get on without him. He asked Mr. Walsh to accept the gifts as a token of their good wishes. Mr. H. N. Murray said Mr. Walsh would indeed be a hard man to replace. Mr. J. M. Bates endorsed the eulogies and wished Mr. Walsh success. Miss M. Hilmer, on behalf of the lady members, voiced their appreciation of Mr. Walsh’s services and said the value of his work would be fully realised only in his absence. Replying, Mr. Walsh said he much regretted having to sever the friendships made during his 14 years’ residence at Eltham. He had been treated very kindly and he would never forget Eltham. He had always been interested in sport and liked to see it thriving. It was good for both young and old, and he had derived a great deal of fun out of it.
