Only two favourites, Sirona and Star Artist, were successful at the opening of the Takapuna meeting to-day, but most of the winners were well supported, although Eager Rose and Sir Willonyx both paid good prices. Diversion Away Smartly. Jumping out cleanly from No. 1 position Diversion, well supported on both machines, led all the way. to win the Trial Stakes from the each way favourite, Killadar. Wiggins made the most use of his early advantage on Diversion, who turned into the straight three lengths ahead to win all out by a length from Killadar, who finished on strongly. Laudatory, always well up, was a fair third, followed by Morehu, Echo Song, Horowhenua and Teddy’s Boy. This was Diversion’s best performance to date, but she was assisted by her good beginning. Horowhenua was never dangerous, although he was not far back at the end. Sir Willonyx at Last. Capably handled by A. E. Ellis Sir Willonyx scored and end to end victory in the Orewa Highweight Handicap, prevailing by three parts of a length from the each-way favourite, United, Thespis half a’ length back third. Sir Willonyx has always been a smart track galloper, but he was previously disappointed, and this was his first success. He ran out the nine furlongs solidly and is apparently suited by a bit of distance. United was unlucky, as he struck trouble near the five furlongs pest and then had to come round on the outside. Thespis made a good showing, but Alpinus failed to stay after pulling hard early. Limbohm’s Brilliant Run. It was with a good finishing run that Limbohm, second fancy on both machines to Gold Pocket, got up to defeat Imamint in the Ferry Handicap. He was Well back when Roman Mascot headed

the pacemakers, Solomon and Barograph, nearing the turn. There Imamint and Gold Pocket also moved up, and the former looked like winning half-way down the straight, but Limbohm got up to beat her by a nose. Roman Mascot was a fair third and Gold Pocket fourth. It was Limbohm’s third race within a week, and as he raced at Ashhurst on Monday and Trentham on Wednesday, he had a very strenuous week with racing and travelling. Imamint just failed at the end and is rapidly regaining form. Solomon and Barograph both stopped badly at the finish and Gold Pocket failed after having every chance. Eager Rose Breaks Course Record. Eager Rose, at double figures on the win machine, was responsible for a surprise in winning the Takapuna Cup in the course record time of 2m. 21 3-ss. for a mile and three furlongs and 40yds. Eager Rose assumed command after going two furlongs and ws never afterwards headed. She was four lengths clear of Master Norval and Master Brierly in the middle stages and held them off after they had run up to her at the turn, winning by a head from Master Norval, with Master Brierly a neck away third. Alloy was right up fourth and finishing on, but none of the others ever gave any trouble. Master Brierly swerved badly under pressure near the post, but the happening.did not make any difference to the result. The Favourite Prevails. Only five started in the Calliope Handicap and the each way favourite Sirona duly scored. Sirona led into the straight and withstood a determined challenge from Gay Athlone to win by a Short neck. Lady Burleigh, who carried 151 b. over-weight to secure the services of L. J. Ellis, was a poor third. Kelly hit the fence near the turn and threw his rider right over the fence. Kelly cut his forearm and came in bleeding badly. Star Artist’s Race Record. The favourites, Star Artist and Boughal, finished first and second in the Wynyard Plate. Star Artist indulged Boughal in the lead until reaching the turn and then went up to beat him by a length and a half. Kurapae was half a length away third and Pelagia was fourth, followed by King Musk and Arawa Rose. Stai' Artist rai. right up to her best form and registered a race record of lm. 26 l-ss. Boughal displayed his usual brilliancy and fought on well without having a chance with the winner in the last furlong. King Musk failed to show his true form but may

be better suited over nine furlongs on Monday.

Gay Broney in Fine Finish. The r consistent Gay Broney, third fancy on both machines to Cherry King and Caliente, scored a well deserved victory in the Rangitoto Handicap. Wee Musk, Gay Broney and Jewelled Girdle made most of the running. Once into the straight Gay Broney, Royal Gallant, who had made a fast run on the outside, Caliente and Cherry King all disputed the lead, and in a fine finish Gay Broney won by half a head from Royal Gallant, who beat Caliente by a length and ahalf. Cherry King was fourth and Wee Musk fifth. Royal Gallant may have won only for hanging in badly at the finish. Caliente should be improved by the race, but Cherry King was disappointing. Rereatu’s Decisive Win. Rereatu, second fancy to Sinking Fund, scored a decisive win ip the Zealandia Handicap. Exaggeration, Sinking Fund and Rereatu raced abreast in the lead for over half a mile, when Rereatu drew to the front to lead into the straight from Sinking Fund, Marechai, Jalldy Karo and Puriri Park. Rereatu held his own in the run home and won by a length and a-half from Puriri Park, who finished strongly to beat Jalldy Karo by half a length. Marechai was fourth and Sinking Fund fifth. Rereatu’s performance was good, as he was outside two horses most of the’ way. He is right back •to form. Exaggeration stopped badly and Sinking Fund was also beaten by the fast pace.
