TARANAKI ATHLETES

EIGHT RECORDS BROKEN CHARTERIS IVINS CYCLE RACES BLACK WINS 220 AND 440 YARDS. EVENTS TO ADLAM AND SULLIVAN. Fine weather favoured the Taranaki sub-centre amateur athletic and cycling championships held at Eltham on Saturday and the events possessed great interest for a large number of spectators both in the afternoon and evening. The events were well contested and there were many splendid finishes. A feature of the day was the great performance by M. Charteris, who won the three cycle championships. A. Adlam also had a triple win with discus, shot and hammer. G. Sullivan secured honours in the broad jump, hop, step and jump and pole vault. S. A. Black won the 220 and the 440, R. L. Knight the 880 and the mile, Miss N. Clark the ladies’ 100 and 120. The 100 yards, went to J. L. Sullivan, the three miles to L. E. Garrett, while the hurdle events were won by L. A. Newall (120yds), C. P. Rogers (220yds) and H. L. Thomson (440yds). S. Coleman won both walking events and New Plymouth teams carried off the relays. W. Ireland won the high jump and S. Lay the javelin throw. New Plymouth easily secured the club championship points, winning 104 points, with Stratford 59 points second, Eltham 36 points third and Hawera 33 points fourth. NEW ZEALAND RECORD. S. Coleman, Eltham, broke his own Taranaki record of 3m. 10 l-ss. for the half-mile walk, his time being 4-55., or 9 2-ss. lower. This is also a New Zealand record, being 1 3-ss. less than that of R. Cameron (3m. 2 2-ss) at Auckland in 1932. Coleman also made a record performance in the mile walk, bettering his previous record of 6m. 52 4-ss. by 11 3-ss. R. Knight, another Eltham man, made a dual record. In the 880 yards he covered the distance in 2m. 3 l-55., or 1 3-ss. better than J. Whiting’s record. In the mile he broke his own record of 4m. 43 3-ss. by 1 4-55., his time being 4m. 41 4-ss. M. Charteris, New Plymouth, lowered the half-mile cycle record from 72' 2-ss. to 725., his time being the same both in his heat and in the final. Miss N. Clark, New Plymouth, clipped 2-ss. <off her own previous record of 12 l-ss. in the ladies’ 100' yards. In the 220 yards intermediate M. G. White, New Plymouth, shortened G. A. Taylor’s record of 25 3-ss. to 25 l-ss. The New Plymouth team established a new Taranaki record in the men’s relay, reducing the time by 1 4-ss. from 3m. 53 4-ss. to 3m. 525. In his heat in the 220 yards S. A. Black equalled his record of 235., but he was l-ss. longer in the final. In many events the times were close to the record, and as atmospheric conditions were not of the best the performances were regarded as very good. The track was well prepared and in excellent order and in the evening the lights round the oval and over the straight track provided splendid illumination. The Eltham Athletic Club had full charge of all preparations and no detail was neglected to ensure complete success. The meeting was well run in every way and the events proceeded well up to schedule without the slightest hitch. Great credit is due to the work of the .officials. A close contest all the way with • only inches separating the placed competitors. STUART BLACK IN FORM CHARTERIS RIDING SPLENDIDLY. MISS CLARK OUTSTANDING. (By “Also Started.”) Stuart Black was the outstanding runner of the Taranaki championship meeting. He won the 220 and 440-yard events in effortless style, his low, powerful stride having his opponents in trouble from the start. His finish in the inter-club relay was a real gem and brought the crowd to its feet. With only the final 220 yards to be run New Plymouth’s chance looked hopeless, and even the club’s most sanguine supporters had given up all hope. Black had to give away starts of easily thirty yards, and against good runners. He took over the baton splendidly and went after the two leaders. Mustering

up a phenomenal burst of pace he rapidly reduced the gap and, finishing in wonderful style, gathered them in 30 yards from the post and went on to win amidst enthusiasm. It would certainly be interesting to know the time for that final furlong; it/must have been one of the best ever recorded in the province. J. ’L. Sullivan won the 100 yards in a splendid finish, but he was a trifle lucky to beat the Hawera man, T. Kerr, who made a great effort after a slow beginning. Cambie was right up in third place, inches separating the three. Sullivan won his heat in the 220 yards blit was no match for Cambie in the final. Cambie was second, Black having passed the post some time before. . , R. L. Knight made the pace a cracker right from the start both in the 220 yards and the mile, creating new figures in both events for the province. J. Whiting attempted to go with him in the 220 but collapsed thirty yards from home and M. Boyle,- finishing strongly, secured second place. This diminutive New Plymouth boy ran two splendid races, both in this event and in the Telay, where he beat Knight over the half-mile. His two performances stamp him as a runner of promise. In the mile Knight made all his own pace, L. E. Fox being content to run into second place. As was generally expected, L. E. Garrett had- no trouble in retaining his three-mile title, but Fox must be given credit for a solid race. Garrett is in solid training for the big marathon at Wellington. Splendid Hurdling. H. L. Thomson scored a comfortable win in goou time in the 440 yards hurdles, but drew the outside lane in the 220-yard event and could only fill third place behind C. P. D. Rogers and L. A. Newall. Rogers fenced splendidly and fully deserved his win. Earlier in the evening Newall had beaten Rogers in the 120 yards race; he is undoubtedly the province’s best man in this event Cyclist’s Triple Win. M. Charteris won the three cycle titles but had to prove himself a real rider to do it. He unwound a great burst of pace in the half-mile and, hitting the front with almost a furlong to go, never looked like Being caught. In the three miles event Charteris received anything but the best of passages, and with a round to go appeared hopelessly pocketed. One of the leaders weakened, however, and Charteris, seizing the opportunity like a real champion, pushed through and just -won in a desperate finish from T. Horner, who also rode great race. This is really Charteris’ first track season, and he is improving so quickly that his meeting with the present New Zealand champion J. Wade at New Plymouth on Saturday is being awaited with interest. C. Hawkins and J. Burke also performed well, and with a little more experience the latter will do even better. Walking Feats. S. C. Coleman had no difficulty in retaining his walking titles, putting up great times for both idistances. He should go close to winning a New Zealand title, that this, of course, his style passes the judges at Wellington next month. His brother, W. Coleman, was expected to extend him, but did not do as well as anticipated. Field Events. S. A. Lay did not appear to be extending himself in the javelin, and his showings were much below his best. His presence at Stratford has evidently had a beneficial effect in that club as Stratford won most of the field events, Adlambeing most promising. The high jump provided a great contest between W. Ireland, Stratford, and S. G. Dinniss, New Plymouth, the former

just clearing sft 6|in. in his third:attempt to win. Dinniss juriiped ' two inches higher than his previous best. G. Sullivan won , both , the broad jump and the hop, step and jump, his. effort in the latter event being the best that he has recorded for some tilde. Miss Clark’s Improvement ‘ r ' ’ Miss N. Clark demonstrated that she will be even better this season than she , was last. It was only .the fact that she was running against the breeze that prevented her from creating new figures for the 120 yards. In the. evening when the wind had died she clipped 2-ss. 'off her own Taranaki record in the 100 yards, running that distance in the great, time of 11 4-ss. Miss E. Reid, Hawera,. beat Miss Di Brown, New Plymouth, by a » narrow margin in the 120 yards, but Miss j.~ Brown reversed positions in the 100. yards. There is little between the two- • girls.
