PERRY BEATS CRAWFORD
THREE STRAIGHT SETS WIN WEAK SERVICE OF AUSTRALIAN. UNPLEASANT BARRACKING. By Telegraph—Press AsSn. —Copyright. Rec. 6.30 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 27. In the Australian tennis championships singles final F. J. Perry defeated J. Crawford 6 —3, 7—5, 6—l. In the Women’s singles final Miss Hartigan beat Mrs. Molesworth 6—l, 6—4. In the mixed doubles final Moon and Miss Hartigan defeated Dunlop and Mrs. Westacott 6—3, 6—4. The courts were slippery following misty rain. Perry played magnificently throughout and won many points with good-length drives to the cornets, forcing Crawford into errors. The Australian’s service was very Weak and he frequently double-faulted. Petty’s anticipation of Crawford’s Shots Was faultless. Continuing the attack he ran out an' easy winner.
An unpleasant incident occurred When Perry was leading s—l in the final set. After Crawford had won the' game a spectator cried, “How do you like that, Perry?” Perry turned and said something to the crowd regarding barracking and sportsmanship. Further barracking followed, and then Party said, “What is this; a cricket or tenhis match?” The game was held up While the umpire requested order. Miss Hartigan’s strong forehand shots were too good for Mrs. Molesworth, who appeared not to know whether her opponent intended a side-line or crosscourt shot, so well were Miss Hartigan’s strokes concealed.
Had Dunlop afforded Mrs. Westacott any support the mixed doubles result would probably have been reversed. Mrs. Westacott was easily the best of the four, while Dunlop’s play was pathetic.
