FIGHT WITH LEOPARD
TRANSVAAL FARMERS’ ORDEAL.
DRAMATIC ENCOUNTER ON VELDT. Pretoria, Jan. 17. A Transvaal farmer who fought e a wounded leopard with his hands is now lying in the Pretoria General Hospital suffering from terrible wounds on the face and body. When a calf was killed on the farm run by Martinus Loots and his two brothers they set out on the trail of the leopard, whose spoor was seen around the dead calf.
Following the trail through I the bush Martinus Loots came suddenly upon the leopard crouched less than 10 yards away. He fired, but only wounded the animal with small shot, whereupon the leopard sprang upon him, mauling his body, arms and legs, and biting his face.
Loots’ elder brother rushed up and pulled the leopard off by its ears, so that the third brother could get in a shot. The beast turned and clawed the face and head of the second brother, tearing off an ear, and then sprang upon the elder brother. Using their guns as clubs the brothers finally forced the leopard to retreat, but they were too weak from loss of blood to follow it.
