OHURA COUNTY ROAD WORKS

RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME. GOOD PROGRESS BEING MADE. (By Special Correspondent.) The heavy rain in the central King Country in March last year was responsible for the largest flood on record in the Ohura county and considerable damage was done to a large number of the roads under the control of the council. Realising the plight of the settlers the council lost no time in making application to the Minister of Public Works for a large sum of money to repair the flood damage, and when the money became available the chairman of the council (Nir. ■ G. Denison) immediately caused tenders to be called for metalling nnd formation work in the two ridings Ohura and Matiere. Following is a resume of the important road works in the course of construction:— The relief camp workers have laid the metal on Tokirima Road as far as Opatu, and the work is now being continued towards the Wanganui River and on the by-roads. A number of the men did not return to camp after the Christmas holidays, and it is not an easy matter to All their places. It is a single men s camp, the remuneration being 10s a week and keep. Mr. K. Kallil (Ohura) is proceeding rapidly with his eight-mile metalling contract on Tongaporutu Road. When this is completed it will give metal access to Ohura from the far end of the Waitaanga Settlement. About one mile of metal a week is being laid, and with ordinary weather the work should be completed before the end of March. Mr. N. E. Margan (Matiere) has almost completed his contract for metalling about 28 chains on Waikaka Road past Mr. W. Sandison’s property. Fairly good progress is being made with the metalling of Mangaparara Road beyond the Ohura County. Mr. J. Roche, Ohura, is the contractor. . About 25 chains of metal has been laid on Mangapapa East Road by the contractor, Mr. R. C. Kelly, Matiere. When this contract is completed Mr. F. R. Rutherford will have an all-weather road to Matiere. Mr. J. Rudsits, Taumarunui, made a start with the pumicing and metalling contract on the Mangapapa-Akatarewa road a week ago, and is now laying about 10- chains of pumice a day. The contractor is carting the pumice from the main highway near Tapuiwahine and the metalling will be commenced at an early date. The contract extends 4 miles 28 chains. . The work on the Ohura-Mokau road is an eight-mile metalling job, and is being done by relief workers, all of whom are married men. The camp, which is under the control of the Public Works Department, is at present short-handed and although the wages are 10s a day there is difficulty in filling vacancies. The metal has to be quarried and crushed, and the plant is barely, capable of keeping two lorries employed carting on to the road some miles away from the crusher. At present only a coarse layer of metal is being laid and probably a little over a mile has been done. Later a top-dress-ing of finer material is to be , laid over the coarse metal. FRIENDLY BOWLING MATCHES. KAPONGA TEAMS BEATEN. All five teams of Kaponga bowlers were beaten in friendly games against Eltham and Manaia at Kaponga on Saturday. Eltham won by 49 to 35 and Manaia by 84 to 53. The results are:—
