“MUST BE MET BY EMPIRE"

COMPETITION BY JAPANESE SIR JAMES PARR EMPHATIC FLOODING; OE THE MARKETS ‘THREAT TO NEW ZEALAND? By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8.25 p.m. London, Jan. 26. Sir James Parr, the new New Zealand High Commissioner, spoke strongly in a special interview with the Daily Telegraph to-day on the subject of Japanese competition. He said the threat to New Zealand imports from Britain and to New Zealand’s own industries was most serious. “Our methods and trade marks are copied,” said Sir James. “The marks are cut from under our feet. The shops are flooded with goods at prices which would be laughable if they were not so disastrous. It seems to me that the problem must be met by the Empire as a whole. Our manufactures are in constant touch with the Government, which is in constant touch with the British Government. Australia is in exactly the same quandary.”

The Daily Telegraph in an editorial says: “New barriers and anti-dumping regulations will not meet the whole of the difficulty. We have to consider Japanese competition in neutral markets as well as in cur own.”
